Maruzen is a big brand department store in Japan. They carry their own line of pens and inks named Century and Athena. It seems most of their inks are made by Sailor. I'm not sure how many inks they offer at the moment but I know they have some stunning colors in the line up. It seems follwoing inks were / are offered to customers:

  1. Akane (limited edidion, Nihomnashi branch)
  2. Eternal Blue
  3. hatobanezu
  4. Lemon
  5. Midori
  6. Renga
  7. River Blue
  8. Sepia (Athena branch)

If anyone is able to complete the list, I would be grateful.

By means of exchange I've managed to get a bottle of Renga. The jewel Sailor bottle looks nice but the cap feels cheap and, to be honest, I prefer regular Sailor bottles.

Renga is really great color that I enjoy a lot. The ink feels smooth and behaves well in most pens - I had issues with it in Graf von Faber-Castell Ambition: the ink used to dry out in the nib and cause hard starts. in other pens however it's behaviour was flawless.

Don't like it and have no regrets over bypassing it for purchase several times.

Totally agree with the cap of these bottles--feels cheap, bit too pliable, and it seems to encourage ink from the cap to cascade over the glass threads. When the ink on the threads dry, it acts much like a glue, making it very difficult to reopen the bottles at times. I've never had that issue with the jar bottles, which I love.

Ink, a drug.

Seems nice. However it's a bit too red for my taste of a brown.

Renga is supposed to be red... a brick red. At least, that is what I was told.

Thanks for the review. Not an ink for me (although the Tomoe River paper exemplar does seem to enhance the color).

I want to get a bottle of Renga eventually. I will make do with Kobe #39 in the meantime.

I do agree with everyone's thought on the cap of the diamond bottles. The caps on the stout Sailor bottles are much, much better.

Thank you.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 2 months later...

wow, I think I am in love with this ink. Amazing red.
Does someone know an alternative to it, something really really close?. Kobe#39 seems to be slightly darker and Oxblood, slightly clearer.

Well, you may try Nagasawa-kobe 39 (Brick). Organic's Studios Oscar's Copper was quite close but it's no longer produced. Diamine Terracota isn't as rich as this one. Actually I'm interested as well in finding cheaper alternative easily available in Europe. I must give a sample of this one to Konrad (KWZI) and ask him to brew something similar.

this would be really great !!!

I will try Kobe #39 anyway, despite it seems a little bit more brownish than Renga.

thx Vis.

Vis, to my eye, this one seems very close to Maroon #1 - am I completely off?

I have to say that the Kobe brick is delightful. Although I do love KWZI!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
