Beauiful shading. Thank you for sharing this. I googled Kingdom Note Cambaroides Japonicus to see where to purchase this ink online. Guess what. Even google doesn't know. Google, which knows the approximate age of the solar system (4.6 billion years, give or take a few weeks) doesn't know where one can purchase this ink online.

That's a sad commentary on:

1. The decrepit age of the solar system

2. Kingdom Note inks, which are very hard to obtain

3. The unfairness of life (Who knew?)

Love the shading. But this one is on the list for me as a "maybe" (I can see where gylyf is of two minds about it). And if it's in the category of "unobtanium" that makes my decision simpler.... :(

I love this ink. Whilst I'm a devotee of rich, saturated colours this one is just so charming. It looks beautiful on white hand-made paper. It has that soft vintage look I'm coming to appreciate more & more. Very few inks achieve the look, but the Kingdom Note later series do (GvFC Deep Sea is another). I also appreciate that whilst it has a faded appearance, it still writes with a smooth feel from my finer nibs, unlike Herbin inks.

Google can find it, however, it's more easily found in Japanese. ;)

It's currently unavailable.

gylyf: Informative ink review, as always! Is the ink so...uninspiring on other papers?

Agreed. It's definitely growing on me.

I actually do like it a lot. Like migo says, it has a definite vintage vibe. Here it is on more absorbent paper (it behaves a lot like Rhodia):

Sailor seems to be making more of these J. Herbinesque inks (watery, pastel, not-so-lubricating inks) these days.

That definitely seems to be the case with the last couple of KN series (and, I guess, some of the reissued 4 Seasons?).

In that picture, it looks a lot like some of the recent Montblanc LE blues, like Diamond. Hm ... maybe I'll look into getting this one eventually. I am slightly charmed by the vintage vibe! <3

I've been using it again for the first time in a few weeks and, after a little ambivalence, am squarely in the "charming" camp!

Thank you for the review.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
