P W Akkerman Inks Test

Well, well, well. Thirty one of these inks tested in total and half way through I got the strangest feeling of ‘Déjà vu’. But before I go into that, a little bit about Akkerman. It’s a Dutch brand, with a heritage, and consists of 30 colours with a washable blue. And a very attractive group of colours they are too. Not only that, they come in the most incredible bottles!

BUT that’s where I stop. These inks behave exactly the same way as Diamines. Okay, I haven’t tested ALL the Diamine range bit I have checked and cross checked with the ones I have and to my mind there is no doubt so if you want to know how they behave have a look at my previous Diamine tests. I adore Diamine inks and you all know that, but as I say, I thinks these are they. I am also a hard grafting creative who still needs to win the lottery. So, if you’ve got the money and like fancy bottles, here you go. If like me you’re into the product, Diamines are better value, and it’s a bigger range.

All tests on Bockingford 200lb watercolour paper AND I used my very own Frankenflex pen!

There have been discussions about whether Diamine actually makes the inks for Akkerman. But in at least one case they are NOT just rebranded. I tried Diamine Registrars a couple of years ago and it oxidized to a washy blue grey. OTOH, Akkerman #10 is a much nicer iron gall ink -- it goes a lot darker.

I have a number of Diamine inks, and most of the ones I've tried I liked. I have a few of the Akkerman inks, besides the IG ink, and I like them as well. And I'm willing to pay a bit extra for the awesome bottles.

Yep... that was the best kept secret for some time... until Visvamitra started testing them and comparing them to Diamine..

So, no surprises there. ;)

As I pointed out back then, Akkerman's # 10 has a similar look to the blue-blackness of Diamine's Registrar's during writing, before it dries but it (the # 10) is a much wetter ink. Registrar's is the driest iron-gall ink I've ever used. Whether Akkerman has used Diamine as a basic or starter model here, or not, they sure have eliminated that insufficiency.

You are doing wonderful work. Thank you.

These are the inks that I've personally compared, that are the exact same:

#2 Residentie Blauw - China Blue

#24 Zuiderpark Blauw-groen - Teal

#23 Bekakt-Haags - Chocolate

I had suspected #15 Voorhout Violet was Damson, but VV has a bit less red. And #10 is so different to Registar's that it is a different ink. And, it is also the wettest IG ink I've yet to try. Works and looks perfect in an old safety pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
