My First Montblanc Please Help Authenticate

Hello FPN,

I just started the fountain pen hobby about a month ago. I prefer to expand my collection from eBay since I find that to be more fun. I have done extensively research online before I make my first purchase. A few days ago, I got my first Montblanc Meisterstuck 144SP. It appears to be the real deal but I would like some expert opinions to help me sleep better at night. My iPhone camera can't capture the clip but it has the serial number, GERMANY, and METAL. Underneath the clip, there's some small fonts that I can't make out, but it's definitely not GERMANY nor PIX like some other models. Let me know what you think. I'm looking forward to add an 146 and an 149 to my collection soon. Any suggestion would be appreciated since I've heard that certain year vintage are better than others.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Looks too well made to be a fake, and the ebonite feed clinches it for me, fakes always mess up the center bands and the emblem top in solitaires.

Hello and welcome to FPN. :W2FPN:

Your Montblanc 144SP certainly looks authentic to me. Try and be careful to not dip the pen too far into the ink bottle when filling as the band next to the nib is only gold plated and corrodes very easily. The cap and barrel are silver.

Thanks guys for the reply. I don't like dipping my fountain pens in the ink bottle cause I found that to be messy. Instead I dip my converter in a smaller bottle and draw up ink that way so I only need to wipe the tip of the converter. This way it keeps my feed and nib clean.

Hi guys,

Thanks for those initial responses. Got my 2nd Montblanc today, a Starwalker red gold. Unfortunately, it's cartridge only. Is there a converter that will fit? This looks authentic but I know there are a lot of good counterfeits out there on this popular model. It writes very smooth with consistence lines. I don't know if you can see it but underneath the clip, it says "Made in Germany." What do you guys think? I also have 2 Sailor Realo incoming, 1 in gold and 1 in silver trim. Can't wait to get those. I'll share when I get it.

The Starwalker looks OK to me. A standard Schmidt K5 should fit. I use one in my Starwalker Extreme without any issues.

Starwalker looks authentic to me too. :)

It's always good to see the serial number in the correct place as well as a Starwalker nib. :D

I just purchased a box of black Montblanc and a box of blue Montblanc ink cartridges. I'll go through those first before buying a converter. Thanks for the response.

As promised, here are my two new Sailor 1911 Realos. They are very beautiful pen, well balance and just the right amount of feed back. The pen is about the same height as my Starwalker and a bit more girth. Very comfortable to hold. I prefer the M over the F. Let me know what you think?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
