Help! Pilot Blue Ink On My New Quartz Countertops!

Fabienne

Recommended Posts

The title says it all. I was filling my Ahab with Pilot Blue and a couple of drops of ink flew out of the pen and on to the countertop. I tried a sponge with water on it, tried the abrasive side a small bit but backed off that. What should I use? There are still a couple of blue spots in the finish. Thanks. I know that quartz is supposed to be tough but I am new to it.

a cleaner with ammonia in it? although I don't know, those Japanese inks are supposed to be pretty alkaline, so maybe something acidic? Have you tried pen flush?

No experience, alas! no quartz in those quantities in my surroundings...

I take it that this was not Pilot Washable Blue ink.

I'd try more water first, with some rubbing. If that doesn't get it off soon enough for you then you might try a little bit of whatever cleaning agent you usually use for the quartz counter top. And if it still doesn't come out I'd try some ammonia. Rubbing that in ought to do it.

If after this you still have the blue spots there then I have to wonder if the ink has found a fissure in the counter top. Quartz itself should not be amenable to staining by mere ink. If the ink has found a way to get down into a crack or something in the counter top then you may want to soak the area for a while.

Good luck with this cleaning chore.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

A tiny bit of acetone will take it off. I have a white quartz countertop and that's what I use. No visible damage. Test on an inconspicuous spot.

The answer? Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, straight on the spot and scrub with a sponge. Perfect. FYI.

Good to know.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Hi! I'm glad you found the soap solution! I also use that from time to time on my white quartz. Just for additional info, you can also use a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol on the ink. Sponge is okay, but it's mostly more effective on soft cloths to clean. Here's a link for more info on quartz countertops: https://www.caesarstone.ca/fr/blog/les-comptoirs-en-quartz-blanc/

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
