Question about cases/sleeves for the UB. (Not necessarily MB)

I’m worried that a leather sleeve may rub/polish the matte finish...is this the case?

Any recommendation would be appreciated...plan to use this as an edc.

Im worried that a leather sleeve may rub/polish the matte finish...is this the case?

I use either the MB single pen sleeve which retails for about $90, or I used a double Aston leather sleeve which retails for $15.95. The Aston sleeve has soft thick leather and the double fits my UB better than the single Aston sleeve. Due to the thickness of the leather, the single one is too tight. Hope this helps Edited by 888007888

  • 1 year later...

I recently bought a new fountain pen (Pelikan M205 Demonstrator) and so I decided to clean my 146 Ultra Black for storage.

However ... my nib is now looking golden instead of the original ruthendium-coated inlay ??? (FYI ; the original F nib was replaced by MB to an EF nib)

How is this possible, I only used water ???

Ruthenium-coating tends to peel off over time. Amongst all of my fountain pens, only Borghese 4810 experienced the issue.

Handed it over to the shop who were totally surprised.

They're going to add an extra note to MB and try to get it fixed/replaced under warranty.

They fear however that this will not be accepted and then I will have to pay +- 198 € for a new nib !

And to add injury to insult ... if they replace the nib for which I will then have to pay 198€ ... MB keeps the old nib ???

Will keep you posted on the outcome.

Whenever I payed for a replacement I got the original nib back each and every time.

If it's replaced under warranty they will keep it, of course.

Well .. I got my pen back (already since half February)

The super friendly personnel of penworld.be (B&M store Rombouts in Antwerp) told me they had to write some emails, but ... Montblanc agreed to fix it under warranty, although the warranty expired 6 months ago !

So I thanked the store by buying a Kaweco Al Sport Raw :-)

Haven't decided yet but I'm really considering selling this pen.

I took me almost a year to decide but I will be selling my ultra black. I recently bought a Pilot Silvern Tsumugi (not yet receiced) and will make this my heirloom fountain pen 🙂

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
