Waterman Exclusive - A Forgotten Hero

Hi to all Waterman lovers,

just had an idea to take one of my first Waterman and fill it again with Pelikan Edelstein Amber, after years of not beeing used. It is a blue marbled Exclusive with OGL nib. Using this nib for the first time has been a special experience for me and it chenged my kind of writing totally. In the following years I could collect some more Exclusive (actually 12 FP) and other Waterman.

Unfortunately, the Exclusive is to thin for my hands, it will never be my favourite pen again. But is is nice to remember it as the beginning of another handwriting,

Kind regards,

Volker

Yes, something I have stated here before.

A few of my growing collection.

I was offered one or two recently but the prices were way too high.

Wow, those collections are really really appealing...

Thanks for sharing the images of your collections

Waterman makes such classic and beautiful pens...and excellent writers too!

There is no need to pay high prices for these pens.

Only yesterday this lovely mint condition, medium nibbed, green landed at my door for £25. Which included its original box and converter.

One version I do not have but keep a close eye out for a £25 version.

Nice pen and a great deal, Force.

But you may agree with me that 25 GBP is not a reasonable price for such a quality pen with 18k nib. In the early 90ies the retail price for lacquered Exlusive FP has been about 250 DM (this would be about 200 € or 250 $ today).

I am offering a Tortoise brown FP + Pencil at a price of 120 € at ebay since several weeks and nobody seems to be interested. But I do not want to let those pens go for the price of a Lamy Safari or something simular. Phileas that is of lower quality should not be more expensive.....

Anyway, congratulations on this good deal.

I have a 1980's catalogue in which has been hand written £80. Yes it would be nice to see £100 but few will buy at that price. The last two I have bought have been £25 both mint boxed.

Yes, exchangig rate GBP to DM has been 1:3 in 1990 so 80 GBP = 240 DM

Expert has been 160 DM and now it is 110 € so I think today the Exlusive would have a price of 200 € if it would be a part of the actual range of Waterman products.

It is strange that pens of lower quality like the Phileas (retail price in 2000 = 59 DM) will cost more than pens like Exclusive or Gentleman.

My best deal has been a L'Etalon Sterling Rollerball in mint condition at a price of 35 €. Bad picture, a poor description and a seller who did not know what kind of pen he was offering at ebay.

A small project heading my way.

The seller provided numerous pictures outwith the auction and further description which hinted that the remaining parts where in good order.

So for £10 I get this Tortoiseshell,

Lets hope the broken part comes out without too much trouble so that one of these will make it good.

Update:

I have to report the pen was a failure but I will be keeping it for the 'better' spare parts.

The broken section came out with ease.

In short once a pen enters an ultrasonic cleaner all is revealed. In this case the lacquer was/is in poor condition on the barrel with chips and some underlying corrosion. The cap tassie is dinked in a number of places. The good points being the nib, the clip, the cap and surprisingly the feed. It had a converter inside but the rubber mouth is split though I may have a spare for it. I feel the parts are still worth the £10.

It would though make a nice project pen

This is a joke from the seller. Right? :o

No, the seller seemed genuine. They posted two pen parcels and both were lost. At my suggestion we agreed to wait 7 to 8 days for it to arrive but alas no and then I received my refund immediately.

The thing about mailing parcels for me is that they usually have two addresses on them: Sender and Recipient.

I may be cynical but I always find it suspicious when they are never delivered to either of those addresses, but instead apparently go into a black hole somewhere.

I'm sorry for your loss, but I suppose a refund was your second best option under the circumstances.

The package was not posted 'tracked' so I should have requested it and paid a little more.

As a PO share holder I should not say it but I think stolen is more appropriate. As you say there would be shed loads of these parcels somewhere when clearly there is not.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
