If the flow becomes acceptable when you press down, that’s a sign that the tines are too tight. You really should open them up using thumbs and forefingers. It’s really not so difficult, and if you get other fountain pens later, the skill will come in handy.

Be careful not to expose the inner tines too much or they might scratch the paper if not well-finished or improperly angled to the paper.
