Has anyone done a comparison of this and Hitchcock?

I just got off the phone with MB USA to "check in" on my regular call to inquire about the status of Golden Yellow being available for exchange of my 2 recalled bottles. "While waiting for a concierge to assist me," I discovered the Shakespeare Red was BACK in stock. I had been signed up on the "notify when back in stock list," & had NOT received notification BUT it must have been VERY recent because my Concierge was also surprised to find it out; he had checked the site yesterday & it was shown to be "out of stock" then.

The good news is that they show 1,200 bottles as "Current" stock, so it would appear this might be a good time to order from the MB US site.

Just my two cents :) Yes, I've lost the "f" in "Drops of water"...

My pinky finger is even more pinky after the rubbing test. imag1173-12.jpg?w=1000

A small comparision.

Photos made by camera phone. First and second in sun, third in white light.

Corn Poppy and Winter Glow - Jinhao F nib, Velvet Red - Delta vintage F nib.

Thank you Nikaa, I was wondering how these three (and the Hitchcock) compare. Currently Velvet Red is my only red ink and from your comparison I see I like Velvet the most :)

Old_Inkyhand - I like Velvet Red the most, like you, but Winter Glow is really interesting also.

I forgot put Sailors Oku Yama to this comparision (I have sample), so it will be small udate later ;)

But in my opinion Velvet Red is different that Oku Yama . This one has the similar tone/key like Winter Glow, but only a little.

Oku Yama is darker and more deeper than Winter Glow. It has the same deep like Velvet Red.

I feel like Winter Glow and Oku Yama has a small pink key/tone - I call it "gentle pinky touch" ;)

When you write Oku Yama with fountain pen with flex nib you can see it. :)

But I think this is just a delicate likeness.... or maybe just my feeling

So, each of these red is different ;)

Winter Glow is a little bit too pink for me. I was thinking Oku Yama and Velvet Red might be a bit similar, because in natural light my samples show quite a lot of pink undertones. :) But I've yet to get myself some Oku Yama. Big Sailor shopping ahead.

EDIT: I may be a bit unfair when it comes to my opinion about Winter Glow, it is not an ugly ink... Many people said in many places that it was the best red ink Montblanc had ever created, and I was expecting some kind of an 'ultimate redness'... so I was disappointed when I saw that my 'ultimate red' is some kind of a pinkish red. It is not bad - it is just not as red as in my head (I'm a poet now), and I don't associate this hue with Christmas or winter in general. But it is otherwise fine.

Does anyone know an ink which would be similar in colour to the one shown in Pravda's review? The 'Red Dragon' version of Velvet Red isn't really useful for me, but I would really love to have an attainable 'brick red' ink :)

Diamine's Terracotta, perhaps. It's in their anniversary line up.

How does it actually compare with the standard Burgundy Red?

Answer is a bit late, but I think the Burgundy red is more "pinkish" tant this Velvet Red, which is more brown ...

I love both of them, but Sheakespeare is my favorite :)

One pen roll, two pen rolls, three pen rolls ... So many pen rolls ! Do you want one ?

my tiny shop is open and you can have a closer look on my website to see my cotton (and sometimes silk) OOAK penrolls.

This is hands down my favorite red ink. I love the shading and the slightly brown undertones if the ink. It looks absolutely stunning in a stub or cursive italic.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
