Lucky Day!

I enjoy rummaging around at estate sales. I've found Parker 45's, Sheaffer school pens, Esterbrooks, and many less desirable fountain pens. I buy them all, as long as they are fairly priced, and try to find good homes for them.

Today, I found my best treasure yet!

They are Sentinels with no signs of any use. I assume the price would have rubbed off if they were used, right?

The color looks like Fiesta Red to me, but I've never seen it in person.

I'm going to struggle with whether to use them. I'm a frugal collector, I think part of the fun is getting bargains on really great items. My two favorite pens are a Parker Striped Duofold and an Eversharp Skyline with a 14k gold filled cap. They were very dirty when I got them, but both cleaned up beautifully and are wonderful writers.

All of my pens have always been for using, and I'm not sure whether I should ink this or leave it in its mint condition. Maybe I'll put it up on ebay so a true collector can appreciate it (and I can use the $$ for other pens)! Then again, why would I get rid of one of the most valuable pens I've ever found? Decisions, decisions.

I would not sell such a pen. But then it depends on whether one buys pens for busines purposes or for personal use/collection. Do whatever you want to do with the pen but do take good care of it as long as it is in your possession.

I have the same set.

adyf,

Do you use your pen? I get the impression that it is better, in terms of value, to leave it uninked. But that might take more willpower than I can muster!

Also, if it has never been used, should it still have some kind of service before use? I don't have experience with snorkels.

Since all the rubber parts are at least 60 years old I would definitely get the sac, seals and gaskets replaced before using it.

But yours point in the other direction. ;-)

Good point. So, may be it is not the same set. Lol

If you look closely at the barrel of the pen, you can see that faint chalk lettering remains. It says "Sentinel Medium $22.50".

  • 4 weeks later...

There is a similar set - Snorkel and mech pencil - on ebay right now. The color is listed as "Melon" and they have matching plastic caps with the wide gold band instead of the metal caps on your set. Price started at $10, current bid is at $127.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
