July Big Apple Pen Club Meeting And Bbq !

Recommended Posts

On Thursday, July 14, starting at 7 PM, will be the Big Apple Pen Club's July meeting! The feature this month will be our first ever BBQ. Normally we don't require advance notice of your attendance, but we will need to know in advance, by June 30, if you plan to attend so we can plan the menu and set the price, which we expect to be in the $8-$12 range. It will be BYObeverage -- wine, beer, spirits, soda, up to you. Please let me know your plans by email to bapcemail@gmail.com or via PM here.
In addition to the BBQ, we'll have our usual get-together of friends, fountain pens, inks, and the usual bedlam.
Wait, there's more! Once again, nibmeister Josh Lax will be smoothing and tuning nibs for free -- well, you have to sit with Josh while he free-associates on your use of your pen, so it's not truly free, but close enough.
As usual, the meeting will be at Bard Hall, on the west side of Midtown Manhattan, directions below.
If you are not already on our mailing list, please drop me a note, either via PM here or email to bapcemail@gmail.com . One of the benefits of being on our mailing list is that you get to see the rest of the letter everyone gets...
So, even if you are not resident in NYC or nearby (regulars come from the depths of New Jersey and the heights of Long Island...), but expect to be in town for business, travel, or just to attend a BAPC meeting, please feel free to join us. We meet almost every month on 2d Thursdays; it's an eclectic bunch and we have a good time every time.

Hope to see you on the 14th!

Tim

Directions:

Bard Hall is located at 410 West 58th Street in Manhattan, just west of 9th Avenue/Columbus Avenue. The best way to get there from almost anywhere in NYC is via subway -- take the 1/A/C/B/D trains to 59th Street/Columbus Circle (note: 2/3 trains do not stop at 59th, even though it is a major intersection). Depending on which subway exit stair you use, put Central Park behind you and walk around the southern (left) side of the Time Warner complex, which is 58th Street. Walk west on 58th (against traffic); 9th Avenue/Columbus is the next intersection west. Bard Hall is diagonally across the intersection and three addresses downhill on 58th at 410, immediately west of the small construction site. Please tell the guard you are there for the Pen Club -- you will be expected and directed to the proper room. Feel free to bring any kind of food and drink in with you.

The BAP BBQ had to be postponed to either July 28 or August 11. Grillmeister James has to have surgery. Stay tuned!

So...next meeting is in about two weeks or a month?

I'll bring a Sheaffer Intrigue for Josh to do a minor tweak. A nice pen, the ;last of the Fort Madison Sheaffers, and a pen with a strange filling system. Made only for a few years, so people might not have seen one.

James...good luck!

Welch...thanks for the reminder to post here, I sent to the club this morning!

Friends, the BAPC 1st Annual BBQ will be July 28, at Bard Hall, starting at 7 PM and ending sometime before 7 AM; consequently, our regular meeting will not occur this Thursday.

If you're seeing this post, and your summer travels are bringing you to NYC, you're invited to the BBQ! It will be at Bard Hall, on the west side of Midtown Manhattan (directions above in the fine print). Admission is $10, we will provide all food, Grillmeister James will be at the grill, and Nibmeister Josh will, between bites, smooth and adjust nibs. As for beverages, it's BYO -- alcoholic, nonalcoholic, whatever you want to drink, bring it with you.

Please let me know if you want to attend, either by PM here or by email to me at bapcemail@gmail.com .

best,

Tim

Well, we're all recovering from the BAPC BBQ...it was a blast. We had a good 35 people in Bard Hall, Grillmeister James was assisted by the executive chef of Bar Bacon in a cameo appearance, and we had burgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, London broil, and swordfish...quite the evening. Y'all come back next year, or for our probably much more sedate September meeting, to be announced around Labor Day.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
