Lamy Dark Lilac

Lamy has a few rather pointless LE inks: Neon Lime, Charged Green... Luckily this time they got it right. Dark Lilac is probably the best Lamy ink they've ever made.

Rich and saturated purple with a lot of gold sheen, it's the complete opposite to their Neon Lime and Charged Green.

Sample

It flows well. No water resistance but it doesn't bother me.

Comparison

with:

Diamine Pansy (very similar but somewhat greyer, with green sheen),

Bung Box L'Amant (more red?),

KWZI Gummiberry (redder and no sheen),

Edelstein Amethyst (much more muted and greyer),

Montblanc Lavender Purple (muted),

Sailor Pen & Message Sanyasou (bluer).

Sheen

Loads of gold sheen.

As I have said on other threads, I love this ink. It is in a Lamy 2000 now.

Since I got this last month, I have been using it unrelentlessly; hardly anything else is as good-looking and at the same time so practicable. Perfect wetness and lubrication. Intense and saturated but not overly so like most PRs and/or Ns. The sheen doesn't impress me at all -- that all being almost "phoney" inasmuch as way too dependent on paper, nib, light, angle, photo, scan etc etc. No harm meant! But as you say... it is the best ink they've made in a long time, maybe even the best ink Lamy ever made! I've already chucked out my Neon Lime and Charged Green.

I'm so glad you compared it to MB Lavender. I was worried that the two inks were too similar. Now, I think they are just different enough for me. :)

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Great review of a stunning ink. I'm so glad I bought 2 bottles because the first will be empty very soon.

Surely Lamy must have introduced gold particles to get this effect?

Not really...some Violet dyes have this nice effect like gentian violet for example...

Thanks for the review.

Personally, I think that it's really dumb of Lamy to have made this an LE ink. Yes, it's gotten a lot of short-term buzz (I snagged two bottles when it came back in stock at Anderson Pens because I knew that they had gotten it in to their B&M and e-store while they were at the Triangle Pen Show a few weeks ago). But this is an ink that should be a staple of their regular line -- it's gorgeous and pretty well behaved (I was just using it in the Dark Lilac Safari today, from the original ink sample I got when the ink first became available).

I've got it in a fairly wet pen, and I'm not getting this kind of sheen. Still it is very pretty.

Another excellent review. Thank you!

I was able to pick up a bottle on the second go around. Very impressed with behavior. Props to Lamy.

lg - thanks for including the Gummiberry, I think I'm going to order that for my new dark purple Pelikano Jr and. leave the Dark Lilac in my Frontier.

Well, that's disappointing news. I'm kind of experiencing the opposite - too much.

WOW, you seem to get sheen from whatever ink you use. I'm impressed.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
