Well, adapt and survive as they say. I will begin experimenting with itching powder in some sell-ons (eBay auctions should be a good, impartial barometer of success). Can some Americans please check the suitability of gunpowder.

If you mean black powder, I can actually get that test done for you. If you mean something more modern, afraid i can't help...

Joking aside, i'm just back from the supermarket and the shelves were full of talc based baby powder. Perhaps they're allowed to clear their stocks, in the manner Thatcher's govt. shamefully allowed resellers to clear their stocks of asbestos-containing plaster? I think I'll drop a line to Simple, ask if there's been some sort of Brussels diktat.

"Thank you for your recent comments to Simple.

I'm sorry to tell you that we stopped making Simple Baby Pure Talc some time ago due to low demand. There are currently no plans to relaunch this product."

In my area in the US I've seen commercials for lawyers offering to represent people who've used talc powder and now have some form of ovarian cancer so I suspect there may be a complete ban before too long.

If you mean blackpowder, I've found the best sources to be Swiss/German (Scheutzen, Swiss, or Wano), or Brazilian (Elephant), finally American (Goex).

If you mean smokeless powder, I'm not up to date with that newfangled stuff.

Americans. Please do not try gunpowder as a dry lubricant for your ink sacs and diaphraghms!

I was only joking about the gunpowder, referencing the stereotype of its ubiquity in the average American household as perceived by us foreign types.

I was joking about the itching powder too, I'm not auctioning pens serviced with itching powder!

This has to do with Shower-to-Shower and such type powders used to absorb perspiration on the female genitals. It seems to find its way to the ovaries where it may contribute to ovarian cancer - no laughing matter.

All such powders would be unsuitable for use in fountain pens because of their extra ingredients. For use in fountain pens, one wants pure talc powder. One does not want Shower-to-Shower or Baby Powder or, my favorite from the days of the old fashioned barber shop, Clubman.

I use talc from my billiards cone of talc. I bought the cone of talc 22 years ago when we bought a pool table, it is a lifetime supply.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
