Conway Stewart Barrel Problem

Lorna Reed

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help me with this CS No.14? The pen is in overall good condition but the appearance is marred by this crazing effect on the barrel. What would have caused it and is there anything I can do to improve the appearance? Any advice and help much appreciated.post-41470-0-49051900-1466012507.jpg

Hi Lorna

Looks the crazed part of the pen was exposed to heat at a certain time.

Sanding with 1000 grit sanding paper and consecutive polishing will solve the problem.

Wishing you success !

Thanks for the advice, Francis. After several hours with micromesh and Renaissance wax it is looking much better. It could be further improved with more work (if I have the patience) but I'm fairly happy with it for now.post-41470-0-23316400-1466508139.jpg

You have done well. I had a 14 with very similar crazing, I tried different levels of abrasiveness without reaching your success. Sad to say that I was a little heavy handed at the end and a crack appeared through the thread.

Nice work, it looks good.

I'd worry that if you go any further, you could lose the barrel imprint (if that is important to you?)

That's a shame. But, I imagine that the crack would have been there already, rather than you causing it by abrasion?

Perhaps not so much by direct abrasion and more to do with gripping the barrel between thumb and sausage like forefinger.

I agree with the suggestion from Francis on the heat issue, my cap wasnt crazed at all, perhaps because it was able to radiate the heat a little better?

When doing intensive polishing, I protect the imprints, GF cap bands and the like with aluminium foil tape, used by heating engineers but readily available in the likes of Maplins UK.

When finished, Naptha to remove sticky residue left by tape, barbecue fuel works well.

Am I right in thinking this is a casein pen, and the crazing is a common problem with this material?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
