Doric - Can You Help Me Identify This Beauty

Hello guys,

It's been a while that I've been trying to get moderately priced Doric. The nicest ones usually sell for quite a lot of money and it doesn't surprise me. These pen are stunning. ANyway yesterday I've managed to win an auction and soon I'll receive my first Doric. The seller isn't specialised in pens. Actually it was his only pen listing in few months. Therefore he wasn't able to tell me much about the pen. Soon (in a week) I'll receive the pen but maybe, in the meantime, you could help me identify this doric (years, color - Garnet Shell maybe, etc.), I attach photos from the auction. It's possible the nib will need adjustments.

Looking on Syd Saperstien's site, (www.pensburymanor.com) I think it's a Junior Size Eversharp Doric and the colour is called Carnelian Pearl. It looks wonderful, best of luck.

Nice find. But the crazing on the top of the cap will be a problem down the road, as it often is with these colored Dorics.

the top of the cap (the pointed peak) tends to turn yellow and cloudy over time, and then it'll crumble at some point. i'm not aware that there's any way to stop this--apparently it's a chemical process that takes place over time--but i'll let more knowledgeable members chime in.

Best of luck! Having been on my wish list for some time, like you, I've just bought a beautiful green shell Airliner and I'm waiting impatiently for its arrival. For some reason it has a swapped out Parker nib. I don't think I'm going to be able to get my hands on an adjustable nib but I have a gorgeous Eversharp Flexible to make it nearly whole again.

Sorry to jack your thread but my enthusiasm bubbled over! :)

Nice pen. It does have some fluorescence to the top of the cap, but it will be a while (possibly decades) before it starts to crumble. If you store the pen so that it has good air circulation (as opposed to keeping it sealed in a plastic bag etc.,) you will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. Also, it looks like your pen has a cool 18k French export nib, so it will be a cool writer.

I've received the pen. It's in fair condition cosmetically but the nib is twisted a little bit and the insides of the pen dried out and lever doesn't work. Well, some help will be needed :) Also it seems that cap started to degradate but it's not that important for me. I want it to be one of every day pen not the pen I only look at. On the other hand when it comes to looks - this one is a real stunner. The material has amazing depth, especially in direct sunlight. Simply stunning.

  • 5 months later...

That is pretty: I have a Junior with an 18K nib and I've left instructions that I'm to be buried with it.

It's that good.

I've got the same pen as yours some times ago, really a beautiful pen to look and to write with!

Regarding the restoration, if you'll procede by yourself.. i had some problems pulling out the section, a very tight fit. I had to use a secton pliers and a lot of heat to do it

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
