Notes:

- Regarding the model letter designations of the Jinhao 599 foutain pens, I know that there's no real consistency, agreement or official source for which models corresponds to which types, so for the purposes of this test they'll follow my understanding of them. And my understanding is that the Jinhao 599A is the metal version with the Lamy-style wrap-around nib (fine), the Jinhao 599B is the solid-color plastic version that comes in both a standard No.5 Jinhao nib (medium) or a hooded nib (extra-fine), and the Jinhao 599C is the transparent demonstrator version of the 599B.

- Regarding ink names and my choice whether to list them by their original language name or under their English translation, I follow the following three rules: (1) where the name is translated into English for Enlish-only packaging (eg. De Atramentis, Pilot, Graf von Faber-Castell) I'll use that name, so Graf von Faber-Castell 141002 is Hazelnut Brown not Haselnussbraun; (2) where packaging offers multiple translations (eg. Pelikan, Waterman, Rohrer & Klingner) I will use the one listed first or most prominently, so Rohrer & Klingner 40-530-050 is Alt-Goldgrün not Old Golden Green; and (3) where there is no name at all on the packaging (eg. Lamy, Stipula, Kaweco, Sailor) I'll use whatever the English-language website says its name is, so Kaweco 10000677 is Summer Purple not Sommer Lila.

This is a fabulous resource. Great work for the community. Thank you so much.

Thanks! It's always good to hear that others enjoy what I post here and find it useful. I'll have a new round up soon. I just need to find the time to scan the pages and crunch the numbers.

Considering how light weight the Cambridge paper is, it did really well in all but one test.

Cambridge paper never ceases to surprise me, though I should be well used to it by now. Of the notebooks I chose to test it's the one I had the least interest in including at the outset. It and the Five Star I added at the end to get the number up to ten. I'm really glad I took a chance on using it for this.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
