Need Help Identifying This Sheaffer

Hi, I found two (abandoned) fountain pens in my dad's old pen holder. He doesn't remember what they are, they're pretty old. One is a Sheaffer and the other is a Parker. He reckons they are probably beginner/starter fountain pens.

 

I've attached the photos. On the nib.. it says: SHEAFFER USA 585 14k

 

It uses a cartridge, and I'm planning to buy a converter for this since I happen to have a bottle of ink.. so I need the model of this pen. Thank you :)

And I'd never call a Targa a "beginners" pen. Not particularly expensive when they were new, but very good writers. I bought three of them L O N G ago. Still favorites.

Hahaha, well.. that was according to my dad who grew out of his fountain pen phase long ago. I've picked up two of his fp like I mentioned earlier and am beginner myself so I have no idea, truly. How long ago would you say you bought yours? Since it's pretty late right now, tomorrow I will start an identification thread for the Parker one as I have no idea what it is.

 

I am LOVING how the Parker one writes, but think it's a bit too broad for my liking. I can't wait to try out the Sheaffer. :)

LOL. I have fountain pen ink older than that. Targa's are great, super reliable pens. It will need Sheaffer cartridges and converters though.

I also bought mine new around 1980, a 1001 and a 1002 (1st edition). In retrospect, I should have bought a 1003, like Mr Pink, but money was tight back then. One is Fine and the other is Medium. Both remain favorites.

FYI - the pen that the OP has is in great condition. Does not look used. My 1003 that I bought new has a LOT of the brass coming through.

Yes! I'm working on a section-crack in a well-loved example that is pretty much without finish on the lower third of the barrel due to posting the cap.

This was my mother-in-law's pen, and has been around for about 38+ yrs. It is the only Sheaffer I have in my collection, and would like to know what model it is; are converters available; does it require Sheaffer cartridges or regular international cartridges. I have never inked this pen, and I think I would like to begin using it. Thank you for your help. :)

If it is a C/C pen it will take Sheaffer cartridges. Being a cartridge-only pen, I am afraid it would not take a converter. Would you show us the pen with the barrel removal and the nipple for cartridge showing?

The nib is 14K gold with gold-plated furniture. My hubby only had two fountain pens - Esterbrook J Series & this Sheaffer. Thank you so much for your help.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
