Here's a funny video I stumbled across quite accidentally. Go Pelikan!

I'd be interested if you put out a 149 against whatever you feel is the like valued Pelikan and see what people would choose.

Oh my... but that was funny though. I would have offered my vintage 100N instead, those hold waaaaaaaaay more ink. Just saying ;)

Well, I don't know about the average person, but for me choosing a Pelikan over a MB is a no-brainer.

Although it would depend somewhat on the physical size of the pen: M800s and M1000s would be too large for my hand (not sure about M600s).

I've tried someone's M800 and I know it was too heavy for me. OTOH, I tried someone else's MB 146 and 149 and was pretty underwhelmed (the 146 was "meh", IMO; the 149 had a nicer nib than the 146, but the pen itself was just too big and heavy for me).

Amusing video, though.

Just another personal experience, at one time I had a MB 149 90th anniversary with a stubby BB nib, and a M1005 with a BB nib. The MB is no longer in my possession as I sold it, because in my preferred writing feel, the M1005 beat the 149 hands down :)

It's like asking people whether they prefer cats or dogs :) Nice that we have a few brilliant brands with their own groups of devoted fans. It makes this hobby much more interesting. I'm too poor to judge which one is 'the bestest' for me, but if only I could afford them, I'd take both of them without hesitation ;)

I prefer Montblanc's design (actually a large variety of designs), but I believe that Pelikan's nibs would suit me better.

I like both brands, but I like Pelikan better.

If I ever have to sell one out of my 149 and my M1000, there is no doubt in my mind: I'd keep the M1000 and let the 149 go without hesitating - but I do like both and don't ever intend to sell either. In fact, I plan to add another M1000 (but no plans for another 149).

Between the 146 and the M800 the comparison (to me) is a bit different. In my opinion the M800 is probably the best pen out there, while the 146 is just... meh! I just can't bring myself to like the 146 (but I'll keep trying).

But, then again, this is the Pelikan forum, isn't it? :)

I would have to agree... Been reaching for the M800 significantly more often than the MB 146.... Probably will sell off the MB. Its good, but i had better.... B)

Cat / dog analogy is appropriate!

Very funny video! What's the likelihood of the woman having a nice Pelikan ready? ☺️

Now that was funny.... I have both Mont Blanc and Pelikans so either would have been a great choice....

What would have been even funnier is if he was handled a $6.50 Jinhao 159 :D

Not gonna lie haha this was funny to watch, but this is just a pen right? any pen could spontaneously fail and "outperform" other pens on a small sample data size. The pelikan could have just as easily failed on the spot as well.

Big props to the former minister though for helping her fellow colleague haha, they didnt make too big a fuss over it.

Great video :). Though I have to say, given Pelikan's nib QC it should be the last brand to tease other brands about pens failing. ;)

Since others started the discussion -- funny enough I have both my m805 and my 149 in my EDC pen wrap as I type this and just wrote with both of them. I love both pens, but the 149 takes the cake at the end of the day, for me, because of its size/weight/balance/nib size/overall performance. It has also been one my most, if not most consistent writers, while my previous m805 before this one had a baby's bottom that led to inconsistencies depending on the paper, and this current m805 arrived with its tines severely misaligned. Still I do adore my m805 and I think they are pens that are on par generally speaking - they are two fountain pen titans, just depends on personal preferences, of course! I would like to try an m1000 someday but I doubt I will because of the price and because of the fact that I'm not crazy about the color schemes offered.

Funny video :-). Could have been that the lady had her pen tuned for her own use & the 149 was out of the box not tuned. It happens to the best.

I had a 149 with a medium nib that wrote more like a fine, quite disappointed. I don't have an M1000 but do have two M800 and love them both. Actually they both wrote perfectly for my prefernce OTB.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
