Music Nib - Dip Pen

When I get home (in about 7 hours) I shall attempt a writing sample and a photograph or two.

In the meantime, I just wanted to say that a rather interesting dip nib dropped through my mailbox today. It's a Brause Iserlohn No. 523... and it is a very flexible three-tined music nib. I had a very quick play at work (haven't prepped the nib, just dunked it in some Sumi ink), and it's a bit of a monster! Horizontal strokes are as fine as can be, and vertical strokes can range all the way out to 4 mm quite comfortably. It may go wider if one is willing to risk springing it.

Later!

Okay, my camera skills, and writing skills... well, pretty much all my skills, suck. Hopefully this gives some idea of this odd looking nib.

It's a bit hard to control. The grid is 5mm. Ink is Higgins Eternal. And I wasn't really pushing it.

The nib has a flatter concavity than most dip pens and won't fit into a standard ferrule. I managed to jam it into a $4 E+M straight holder though. That will have to do for this experiment.

The material has been cut out in the middle of the nib and folded back underneath the start of the tines to create an ink cage. It's very effective, a bit weird, but a super clever idea in my opinion.

Wowza!!! Never seen a music dip nib. I must get one! And a built in reservoir to boot! Though i'm not sure how useful it would be as a true music nib without tipping material. but I'm going to order one anyways :)

thanks for sharing, I was clueless about this type of dip nib.

any other music nibs out there?

I think I stumped up about $10 for it on eBay. It looked interesting, and I cannot afford to buy a fountain pen with a music nib just for "interesting", so it seemd like a cheap way of seeing what all the fuss is about. Oh, and I daresay that this is miles more flexible than any of the modern music nibs for FPs. :)

Very cool! Music dip nibs are not common, but all the major manufacturers made one. Just like with fountain pens in the golden age, you could get one, but few people did.

Even though I've got several hundred different dip nibs, that's one type I still don't have. One of these days I'm going to run into a box of them for cheap. Yeah. Right.

In the meantime, that's for sharing, and loved sirius' video as well!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
