Breakdown Of Ink Colors?

This doesn't really work well for me, because so many of my bottles were bought by others and so are not necessarily reflective of my taste.

I am trying to simplify by paring my ink purchases down to the Six Essentials, one each of black (Heart of Darkness), blue-black (very likely Pilot), purple (Diamine Damson), blue (Noodler's Blue Eel; plain Blue is also acceptable), green (Diamine Sherwood), and brown (jury's out)!

I'm allowing myself a second black because I'm ever so slightly leery of putting Heart of Darkness into my dad's black-and-lustraloy "51". But black is hardly my favorite color for writing. And when I was working with paper medical records, I'd keep at least three and sometimes four pens loaded with it, because of CMS regulations.

I loved Waterman Havana Brown, but it fails one of the Essential requirements, fade resistance. I recall it fading to teal just from being left out for a few months. I considered Iro Yama-Guri, but it reminds me of frozen mud and dead twigs. Now I'm considering a number of other alternatives.

I think that what I prefer to write with are brown, green, and Noodler's Blue. I also like to keep up to three markup colors, which can be turquoise, red, blue, orange, fuchsia, or bright green. But one markup color is enough.

I have a shared set of inks with my boyfriend. We have 3 turquoises, 4 purples (both a small and large bottle of Murasaki Shikibu because he got a small bottle and it matched my purple Decimo so well that I decided it would be the default ink for it, so 5 if you count both bottles), 6 burgundies/reds (now I'm asking him because he's right by the filing cabinet o'inks), 1 pink, 4(?) blues, 4 greens, 1 light yellow (for highlighter use), 2 grays, and so far no oranges, 5 blues, and only one true black. And 2 browns.

These only count full-size bottles and not sample vials we have.

Great. I clearly need more ink now to round out the collection, but I feel like I should wait until I have a job, which won't be for at least another 9 weeks. (Though going 9 weeks without buying something pen-related was probably an unrealistic expectation.)

I have 9 bottles of ink:

  • 4 dark purples (for work-related writing)
  • 2 medium-bright purples (for work-related drawing)
  • 1 really bright purple (for markup)
  • 1 dusty blurple (for personal writing)
  • 1 sepia (for drawings that are supposed to be "mostly neutral, with color for emphasis")

Unsurprisingly, the lass who obsessively collects pink pens... leans towards pink inks. I would like to whittle down things and get my hands on a few more blues and a black. Definitely want to trim down my list, since I'm not crazy about all of them, only some!

Of the app. 40 inks in my collection I would say that 25 are in the range black to blue. The others are all over the chart but most of them are dark and saturated. I use the black/blue range 90% of the time.

Approximately:

  • 30% blues
  • 25% burgundy/wine color
  • 20% browns
  • 10% greens
  • 15% assorted other

I use brown most, blue second most. I found the "right" browns right away so have not experimented further... yet! The burgundy color is a hard one to pin down so I have more of those than I should.

I actually started keeping a spreadsheet of my bottles recently. Checking out the numbers I have:

3 Black

1 Gray

1 Brown

1 Red

1 Orange

4 Green

7 Blue

4 Blue-Black

3 Purple

5 Turquoise

1 Pink

I'd say it's definitely Blue-centric right now, but I feel that that's because of my early purchasing choices (and that there are just so many darn cool shades of blue!)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
