Stripping A Nasty Lacquer

I grab cheap pens when I see them at sales. Recently I found a cheap no-name lacquered pen for 50 cents. Ugh, the lacquer was chipped all over, and the pen hardly looked worth the money. Still, I took a leap of faith.

 

And I also took a picture, but I can't find it. Anyway, imagine the nastiest chipped and scratched lacquer you can.

 

I got myself together with some 400 grit wet and dry, and then micromesh pads, and then some Peek (similar to Simichrome) and a microfibre cloth. Now I have this:

It's not perfect. The brass shows through on the cap band (which was originally lacquered), and there are tiny bits of the lacquer left in the indents each side of the clip, which I can't get rid of (I really don't want to try taking the clip out as it's only secured by two little lugs of metal). But it's a nice shiny metal pen. I left the section (brass) slightly matt so that it has a bit more grip.

 

The whole job took just over an hour. I covered the two end caps, which weren't lacquered, with masking tape so I didn't strip the plating.

 

The nice thing about the pen? The nib, after a teensy bit of tweaking, writes really nicely.

Too many pens, too little time!

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
