Have The "i Don't Need Another Pen" Thoughts Hit You Before?

Well, mine just did hard, as I am writing with my second new Pilot Custom 823. Prior to owning the 823, I was playing with pens with different price range, most of them were okay, but none of them amaze me, until I tried the 823. It was the single best writing experience I have with any pen. It was so good that I decided to get another one, with the same nib size, just different colour.

Now in my mind, I am having the thoughts of "I'm good for the next few years, I don't need other pen".

I don't see the need where I need to experience other more expensive pens to satisfy my writing experience, and I probably will bound to get more disappointment.

I think I'm set for the next few years.

Do any of you have similar thoughts and actually stop buying pens(At least for a period of time)?

When I thought all pens were black with gold accents and all inks were black or blue I couldn't see the point of more pens; but now it's a function of discovering nice ink colours. Even with 6 pens for different kinds of blues, I might not be done just with blue: Skrip deserves its own pen, maybe even Pelikan Koenigsblau, and then there is the steel blue I don't have, and then that peculiar shade of blue an old sony walkman had... It never ends.

"NEED" is irrelevant . Joy is a worthwhile pursuit. Stop buying fountain pens, until you want another one.

Mine is certainly saying the opposite right now, and it's hard to shut it off ... Despite having some pens, it keeps saying "I NEED another pen" XD

Not at all! There are so many pens I want, I can't keep up with them all

Once you ask the question, how many pens does one person need?

The actual answer appears to be, ALL OF THEM!

Then, I don't need another pen really doesn't apply.

"I don't need another pen" is so five years ago for me. I'm waiting for "I don't want another pen" to hit. Better yet, for the possibility of buying another pen not even to enter my mind.

I thought I was almost at the "don't want" stage at the beginning of the year, but then I had the chance to get a couple of no longer made pens (Pilot MYU and Murex) that were on my maybe someday list. Now I might really be at "don't want". I've got several different models that write as well as I can currently imagine, a good selection of vintage pens, and several excellent pens that are going mostly to waste because there are others that I just prefer.

But it's true that I never got around to buying a Pilot Custom 823.

Yes, that thought does hit me a lot, especially just before I hit the button to buy another pen. I think I would have a much more difficult time if there was a pen shop that sold nice pens. Once you hold the pen and feel it's smoothness, it would be all over for me. . . Or maybe not. Anyway, my disciplined side generally keeps my desires in check.

Currently, i don't feel the need or desire to buy another pen. There are several pens on my wish list (Pilot Myu, Gate City Postal, etc.), but i don't have the desire to buy them. I have lots of pens that i enjoy using, one more probably would not add any more enjoyment.

If you only wrote one kind of script then perhaps you could just have one pen. I like to use many different styles of nib - flexible, italics, stubs etc - so I'm either going to need a pen with a lot of nib units or... lots of pens! :D

Such logic is inspiring!

I like the chase of obtaining a Vintage FP [ Parkers for the most part ]. This past week I picked up two P51's, one Aero & one Vac with a SS cap [ been looking for one to match the P51 pencil ] and I also picked up 4 Sheaffers. I will always buy more FPs wren the time is right to buy more.

OK given that most of us have budgets that we have to live within, that will drive the restraint.

But given that you are within your budget...

I'm actually considering it. I have a Franklin Christoph and an incoming Scriptorium. Both take #6 Jowo nib units. So, thinking of getting a range of nib units with both standard and custom grinds and then just swapping in and out as required. Although I love the look of some pens I have to say that most luxury brands are out of reach, and most decent vintage pens are not available to people like me.

Finding solutions to problems is fun!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
