Sailor Converter

Most humble apologies if this has been addressed before, my slight scan of topics didn't dredge it up.

I don't like the Sailor converter, the only flaw in their design.

Recently a converter has fallen out of the nib grip and caused a mess when I opened up to refill.

Is this a common thing? A replacement should take care of it?

Should take care, eventually converters will fail too. It didn't happen with Sailor, but happened with a Parker, experienced similar mess, except the ink was came out from cap, which I think is even worst... With Parker took me 2 year to broke the converter, and I expect it will happen with Sailor much sooner, maybe its not develop a crack at the mouth, but definitely will loosen the material, since its much softer plastic, than any other converter I seen. Than I can except what happen with you.

I have that happen to me only once, and thankfully it did not cause a mess. Was not with a Sailor though.

Actually more recently, the problem with Sailor converts was that were leaking out the back.

I use a lot of Sailor pens, have about ten inked now. Have not had a problem other than two converts leaking out the back. These were replaced and no problem since.

I've had this happen as well, but only once. I think it occurs from the plastic either wearing out, or if they make the plastic too hard, it will eventually split near the opening--which is what happened with a Pilot Con 70 once. These days, I mostly refill carts until they wear out, and then pitch them. I agree with others on here, though: a new converter should fix your problems.

Thanks, you 3, for your helpful answers.

It does appear to be leaking out the "top end".

I have to have 1 or 2 other Sailor converters sitting around and will give them a shot.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
