Urushi Lacquer

Legal Eagle

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking lately that we need one official thread for pictures of urushi lacquer pens. Please post the model names and colors for each of the pens you post; Just to help clear any confusion people may have.

I'll start it off with a bunch of pics of a Nakaya Piccolo in kuro-tamenuri with a ruthenium nib.

Ooh, great thread idea! I love urushi, though I only have several urushi pens so far. The Danitrio pens definitely get used more as they are just so darn comfortable to write with and I love the Japanese eyedropper filling system. I think a Namiki Emperor (or another Danitrio) will be my next pen.

Oh my gosh! This is making me faint with pleasure and also spurring me on to photograph my modest urushi collection which I shall do soon and post. The photography in this thread is beautiful, doubt I'll live up to standards, but makes me wonder about publishing an FPN calendar of glamour shots.

The 845 should get more praise. I love these pens! I love the FA nib. So much fun to use.

Gorgeous!

An 845 in black is going to be my one new pen purchase this year, probably around the December holiday. Still mulling whether it will be a medium nib or an FA. I'm leaning to the medium because last year went on a Falcon binge and bought 3: 2 plastic in medium and broad, and a metal in fine. Still mulling though because the FA which is supplied with the 845 (as well as the CH 912) is reputed to be the most flexible of all the Falcon nibs. Also bought a CH 912 with a nice wet stub nib but wish I had gotten the FA. It was a bit of a whim buy and there were no FA nibs available (went a bit wild last year with too many purchases which is why I'll only buy one good one this year).

Jpierson, do you own any "regular" Falcon nibs, and, if so, how would you say your FA on the 845 compares to them?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
