30mL bottles, not 80mL, but still a decent deal.

Life's too short to use crappy pens.  -carlos.q

Five 30ml bottles are about US$23 shipped direct from Diamine. With a 5ml sample of any ink, even the music or flower set inks.

But those same 5 bottles ordered from the sites most of us would order from, like Goulet's, Anderson's, etc is going to be 37.50 + shipping. Even on eBay the best you could do is $34.95. Yes, it would be cheaper to order from the UK, but most people aren't going to do that.

So, this Massdrop is a pretty good deal for the average consumer.

I order from the UK all the time, but have found many people are scared to. Maybe they find it daunting to figure the exchange rate, maybe they don't understand VAT, maybe they don't want to wait the extra shipping time, maybe their bank charges a hefty foreign currency exchange fee...who knows? I order from the UK website for LUSH cosmetics,bath/body company all the time and save an absolute bundle, but even other Lushies who know how much I save don't do it themselves. I don't really know why.

Ink #1: Marine

Ink #2: Sherwood Green

Ink #3: Bilberry

Ink #4: Twilight

Ink #5: Amaranth

Optional InkJournal: No, thanks - I don't need a journal today

Sargasso was on my short list, but I went with Twilight instead. I wanted a journal, but money is really skeet this month, so I had to say no.

The only thing I didn't like about how things were set up was the ink swabs... some of them were way off base. Most of them showed up really dark. For instance, Twilight looked black. So did quite a few others. If you're going to order from this drop, I'd say double check your color choice with another site that has swabs up.

I'm getting a quote of 21.12 GBP for five 30ml inks with the 5 ml free sample, shipped, from Diamine's site, which currently converts to US$30.35.

Oh bugger, the quote I wrote above was for four inks, not five: my mistake.

How much is the shipping for the Massdrop deal? I can't see it and I don't want to sign up for anything else.

I got an ink journal with the J Herbin 1670 drop and I can't stand it. The paper is strange...it's a bit too ink resistant, and it feels glossy and kinda plasticky, not at all like paper I'd normally use. Plus, the binding doesn't like to lay flat, so it's hard to write in unless you break the spine. If you want an ink journal, I'd just get a normal notebook.

Well, then I'm glad I didn't waste the money!

When you drop the free sample it lowers it to cheaper than the massdrop price

Why don't you support you local retailer or a legitimate online pen specialist in the U.S. The retail price Massdrop shows is inflated. Stores and online retailers will cease to exist when you are buying from a site that in buying gray market goods from many of the writing instrument companies. Massdrop is not an authorized retailer for many of the brands they sell. By purchasing from a U.S. site you have the product much faster and service to back up the purchase.

i likely shouldn't wade into this, however....

I completely agree, we should try to support the local sellers. I'm in Canada and we have some very fine retailers who deserve to be supported as do those in the USA, many of which have online stores as well.

I travel for work and I am always looking for Pen stores or places to find Paper or Ink and it's getting harder to find any still open, a situation that will only get worse without our support.

Agreed, support your local retailer when they are available or lose them. An insipid approach will mean they will be gone for ever.

I suppose that everyone should just choose their own best way to shop for themselves. :)

Agreed! Not all of us have access to local stores that sell what we want to buy at competitive prices.

My fingers are always inky and I'm always looking for something new.  Interested in trading?  Contact me!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
