Majestic Purple - Diamine

Manufacturers since 1864, Diamine Inks relocated to this purpose built 'state of the art' factory in Liverpool in 1925, where they successfully carried on using the traditional methods and formulas for ink production. Over the years the company has changed hands and are now located close to the world famous Aintree Race Course

Majestic Purple has nothing majestic in it. It's decent but rather boring purple ink. I don't really like it although the performance is good.

Majestic purple does have some nice shading, though. I would use it.

I really like that KWZI Fiolet galusowy 3 - looks nice and dark and murky

Has it been reviewed here?

PS! found them! But am a little bit confused - on some swatches it looks such a pale pink...

Thanks for the review. I have Pelikan 4001 Violet, and (if I'm doing the rough translation correctly) KWZI IG Violet #3) and have a yet untried  sample of Lamy Dark Violet. I also have a bottle of MB Lavender Purple. And both Noodler's North African Violet and PR Purple Mojo in the category of "more towards the center of the spectrum for purple".

And yet, I'm finding myself attracted to Majestic Purple. It's just *enough* different from the 4001 (being a little less red-tinged) that I may try a sample of it at some point.

Ruth, for another purple a little less red-tinged than Pelikan 4001, consider a sample of Iroshizuku Murasaki Shikibu.

Well, if there was no Dark Lilac, this would certainly do. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a bottle of the Lamy but, if not, I would definitely consider this.

  • 5 months later...

I feel a little disappointed that everyone is trying to compare two very, very DIFFERENT inks, like Majestic Purple and Dark Lilac. Put them side by side, and they fall into totally different tonal groups.

Now, I do LOVE Dark Lilac, true, but I just don't think that the comparison is fair. MP serves a different purpose, and offers a shade that is quite lovely. There, I've said it... ;)

I love my Diamine Majestic Purple! It shades, and has enough brightness for contrast with darker inks (I use it to grade papers) and it behaves beautifully, even on worser paper.

When this DMP runs out, I may try the Lamy, but not until then.

Dark Lilac was a limited edition ink. You may be left with DMP.

I can actually see myself ending up with both inks at some point.

That's one of my favorite inks, de Atramentis (scented) MYRRH. I have it loaded in a Sheaffer Legacy II with a stub nib for big, bold writing.

^^ HJB Thanks. I think my next blue will be KWZ Azure #4 but I'll keep that one in mind.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
