Broken Pel Nib, Please Help!

Hi all,

My pelikan m400 has a misaligned nib, when sent to stone marketing, they said they could not fix it and the nib had to be replaced for £120. I paid £170 for the pen and I don't know what to do. I am still under the warranty, would I be able to send it straight back to pelikan for them to fix it? It seems pointless to pay for the new nib when you could just buy a new one???

If the nib were really broken I would understand. But a misaligned nib that cannot be fixed? That is very strange. Misaligned nibs can be easily fixed with a little care and patience: just hold the nib a little under the breathing hole with your thumb and using a fingernail from the other hand (carefully) lift the lower tine for 7-8 sec, release, check and repeat until it is ok. That is all.

Also, 120 pounds for a M400 nib seems excessive. Niche pens has them for 68 pounds (I'm assuming it is a modern nib).

Good luck.

Where did you buy the pen from? It would seem to be the best plan to deal with the seller, certainly not Stone.

I'm not sure I can fix myself, which is why I wanted the Pen Shop to do it... eep.

Why is Stone not considering that a warranty issue? You can get a new nib for much less than that so it does not make sense to proceed with them. A nib meister would be far cheaper.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I get home. I don't know why they're not considering it under warranty, which is why I thought I might have better luck just sending it to Germany. I remember when my lamy nib was dodgy, I sent it straight to Germany and they fixed it no questions asked.

I've just realised the Pen is with stone right now so I can't actually take pictures. I'll try to describe it though - basically the slit in the middle, one Side of the nib is higher than the other and it feels really weird when writing.

Oh dear. I believe Stone is to the UK what Chartpak is to the USA. £120 is way over the top.

Well, it sounds like a simple tine realignment. Is it something like the example on this page? (scroll down a bit to the first example)

Yep! It's that exactly! I think it might be a little higher than that, but that's all that's wrong with it.

*Just a side question - are the nibs under warranty? Because if they are, even if it isn't a simple misalignment, shouldn't they replace it for me anyway?

Yes the nibs are under warranty. Unless, that is, it can be proven that you have damaged the nib. That would not seem to be the case in your instance.

Ah thank you! What should I do, do you all reckon? If it is simply misaligned, why won't they fix it? Arghhh this is confusing - when I emailed Pelikan directly in the first place, they referred me to Stone Marketing, who won't fix it - so I don't know how I can go around them directly to Pelikan :S

Difficult if Stone have the pen. If you can get it back from them with "no work, no charge", I would go to one of the Pelikan special dealers like Niche or The Writing Desk. I am sure there are others on this forum who will be able to point you in the direction of a good nib meister. The Pen Shop, although they are very good, are not Pelikan specialists.

Right, so I have asked for the pen back, without being charged for it (yay!) and I'll email Niche Pens and ask what they can do.

Give it a try, I have always found Niche very helpful. Good luck. Keep us updated.

When you say the pen is under warranty, how long ago did you buy it? If it is less than 30 days they should just replace it, no questions asked. Was the nib that way when you got the pen?

Nah I got it two and a half years ago, and it wasn't like that, but I haven't dropped it or used any force on it or anything so I'm not sure how they've misaligned.

When I gave to the person in the pen shop she tried it out and pushed quite hard :S I hope she didn't hurt it further.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
