Is This Shading Or A Bad Nib In Need Of Tuning?

Your explanation is yet another layer of understanding.

What you and @Pravda have explained has been a mini-master class in ink flow dynamics.

This reflects why I enjoy reading Fountain Pen Network, as members are generous in explaining fundamental principles to less experienced members.

That @wimg maintains such a helpful site is a blessing for more recent fountain pen owners.

That members like you, @Pravda, @Zaddick @meiers, and @Ghost Plane regularly offer wit and wisdom makes it a lively read.

Thank you so much for systematically explaining the process of ink flow from nib to paper.

And this reflects why I enjoy posting in Fountain Pen Network :D Tom, I am touched by your words and actually honored to see my name referenced along side the numerous great, knowledgeable members that contribute so much to this wonderful community. I would still consider myself a less-experienced member as well, but I am certainly more experienced now as a result of this forum than I was before I found it!

I keep thinking about selling some of my pens but all that happens is I keep acquiring more!

The forum has performed an educational service for me, clearing up misconceptions, broadening my limited awareness.

Your posts, as those of others, enlighten, entertain and offer much-needed perspective.

What's especially appreciated is the easygoing, gentle tone of most posts, in contrast to more strident discussions elsewhere.

Your icon/avatar now features a Visconti fountain pen?

Will you soon hyphenate to Mister Mont Blanc-Visconti? :)

Haha, YES! :lticaptd: My avatar now shows my newest addition to my addiction. I got addicted to Montblanc, the brand, which has since led to the addiction to fountain pens... of any brand. I noticed the ability to change one's display name now on FPN so I may need to do just that after some careful consideration. I cannot divorce from my beloved Montblanc but I mustn't deny my new-found love for Visconti! I think you just discovered the only solution... a legal name change to add a hyphen. Wedding invitations soon to follow...

Thank you, Tom, for now broadening MY awareness. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
