Pelikan M400 Brown Tortoise Confusion. Which Year Is This From?

As far as I know, there have been several M400 brown tortoise editions, some going as far back as the early 80s, but some being made as late as 2009.

I have one question: does anyone know which edition this one is from? I suspect 2009, but I'm not sure.

The cap bands say "Pelikan - Germany", so I assume it is not from between 1980 and 1989.

I would have to agree with you that it is one of the more recent models. My M400 brown tortoise came in the older style (w/ W. Germany) plastic clamshell case with felt on the bottom.

I am not confident with my dates, but I assume your pen was made in the mid 90's? Though a second opinion would be appreciated as well.

I think you may be right. Either way I am very happy with this buy. It is a very nice set that looks like it was never used.

I found some additional information here: https://thepelikansperch.com/2014/09/07/a-treatise-on-the-modern-tortoise-1980-2014/

I'm unable to pinpoint when it was made even with that page, because it says the earlier models have an entirely "brown" barrel, and the latter ones have a barrel like mine but have two gold bands on the clips.

Your pen is an M400 Tortoiseshell Brown made circa 1990-1996. A very nice pen. Enjoy it!

Are you referring this pen (right)? It was commissioned by Galeria Kaufhof in 2003.

And this pen (right) was issued by Pelikan as a M415 special edition in 2009.

By the way, congratulations on the addition.

This yellow/black boxes have been used in the 80s-90s. There were replaced by dark blue ones 1999-2010?.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
