Sailor Irori

Sailor recently re-released the old four seasons inks. Sadly it's a limited edition (again!) and I had great difficulty to have finally got three of them.

Irori is said to be the best red from Sailor. It's been my grail red ink for a long time. It's indeed gorgeous, with golden sheen. But somehow I'm not super excited as I thought I'd be.

Compare

with Sailor (Hougado Pen Gallery) The Redshirt. The Redshirt is slightly darker and richer in colour. Irori failed to dethrone The Redshirt, which is still my favourite red ink.

Can you compare to Kobe #20?

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

I really like this. But again, it is difficult to obtain. Maybe in my summer travels I can find some.

I find my Irori looks a tad more orangey than yours. Is a lovely ink, but is the most orangey I can take on my red.

Love the sheen...

Thanks so much for posting!

How would you compare Irori to Nagasawa Kobe #55 and Kingdom Note Nippon Nipponia?

(I'm still waiting for Kingdom Note to make more Nippon Nipponia available ... )

There's a Kobe #55?

Nipponia nippon is slightly lighter in colour and have more orange (a minimum difference that's barely distinguishable). Also Nipponia nippon has almost no shading.

Oops, yes, "Nipponia nippon".

(I'm looking for a well-behaved, bright, saturated, orange-leaning red with little-to-no shading.)

And for some reason I had it in my head that you'd already scored a bottle of #55. Obviously not.

Well in that case Nipponia nippon is what you need!

I think Sailor has made enough orange-reds... #55 doesn't intrigue me much.

I must admit, this ink did not live up to my fond memories. I received a bottle and promptly filled my demonstrator Bulkfiller, but the rich pure red I remembered was instead slightly candy-sweet and very thin.

I emptied it out and refilled the pen with Kobe 27. Perhaps my tastes have changed, but I don't see myself using the Irori reissue much.

Too many pens; too little writing.

Hmm, Irori, while not my favorite red, is a favorite. Mine is also more orangy than pinkish. To my eye, which generally does not see red as Cyber 6 sees them, it is as Cyber 6 says, very orangy.

Akane remains my favorite red.

Though it's brighter than my usual taste in reds, I will likely end up trying this one at some point.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Thank you for the review.

I wish I could try a sample before I had to invest in a full bottle. Since that may not be something I can achieve, I probably won't try it.

Hmm this ink really isn't for me. It's too bland imo, I'll get a lot of slack from saying that but I tell it how it is. 😬😬

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
