Eco Piston Stuck

T4TEXAS

Recommended Posts

I have had no problem with my Eco until tonight. I started to refill it, but the piston stuck at the bottom. When it stuck partway up I twisted it back down and up again with a little progress, but then sent it back down, and it is now stuck tight at the bottom. I have never disassembled it.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Disassemble and put a 'tiny' smear of silicone grease around the cylinder or on the edge of the piston seal. Then reassemble and work the piston up and down. You should be good to go.

I was going to say the same thing, sounds like too much friction. At least it's on their cheapest pen and not a $50-$60 pen, easier to replace if that doesn't work.

The vial of lubricant, that comes with the pen, is great stuff ! I like it better than any grease. I used half of one vial to lubricate 24 Reform 1745 pistons (shared purchase). One of the buddies thought the pen was broken, so smooth was the piston. A little on the piston ring, and a touch on the threads of the piston knob is sufficient. The mechanism should turn like a Chapstick.

Finally got to this, but can"t get it back together properly. There is a small gap between the piston cap and the body. What am I doing wrong, folks?

Still looking for some help with this small gap. How do I put the Economy back together properly?

It takes a bit of fiddling. I try to realign the piston about halfway into the piston knob, usually tightening the knob onto the wrench to keep it in place while replacing it into the barrel. You may lose a ml in capacity this way, but for me, I'd rather all the parts be flush.

If I get around to cleaning my ECO between flood warnings, I'll take some photographs to illustrate what I mean.

Thanks. Pics would be very helpful, unlike floods.

Okay, the pictures aren't great and I apologize ahead of time for that.

It takes a bit of fiddling, but I find that getting the threads of the piston itself aligned is the difficult part. I find having four of the "threads" exposed when the piston knob is tightened onto the wrench is ideal.

And for reference, a picture of the assembled pen with everything flush.

Thanks for attempting to get me going. I just spent 30 minutes with no progress. I understand this can not be that difficult. Please assume I am the least mechanically inclined soul on our planet. Step by step may help. And 4 of the threads exposed where, relative to what?

Brian Goulet has a great video on disassembly and reassembling the Diamond 580 - but all the parts are roughly the same as the Eco and it's easy to follow.

Thanks much. I completely forgot that video exists. Pretty easy once you know the trick. I never would have figured it out.

And yet it is still flooding. At least I took the rain to Florida for vacation. Followed me there. No rain since I've been back!

Thanks for this reference as the piston in my 580 jammed months ago and I didn't know where to start. Hopefully, I'll have some success now.

I had the same gap issue when I disassembled my Eco this weekend. Got it after watching the above video about four times and fiddling with it. I am not a patient or particularly handy person, but i did eventually get it. I even handed it to my wife later on and declared, "What you're holding is a minor miracle."... specifically referring to my having successfully done it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
