Robert Oster Signature Inks

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

I've recently got back into the fountain pen game and have purchased some of Robert Oster Signature inks to get started, in addition to Quink which I already have. Why not something safer and tested like Noodler's or Sheaffer or any known brand? Mainly the issue was price, I'm in Australia and the Robert Olster inks cost me a third of what say Noodler would cost me with shipping.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with these inks and what your thoughts are on them. If no one has tried them yet then I will post my own review once I have received them for the benefit of others.

Cheers!

Here is a link to my post showing swabs of 3 of the colours - Deep Sea, Khaki & Jade.

Of the others I have I'd recommend Claret. A dusky dark plum red that has amazing shading & dries with grey/pink tints, a little like KWZ Grey Plum. I've just ordered Copper Brown, Barossa Grape, Moss Green & Sky Blue, before his prices increase later this week.

We would love to see the reviews.

Well I wouldn't want to disappoint you! Unfortunately I can't edit this anymore so I'll just post it below. Here we go!

I should note, regarding the water test, I just put a drop of water on the page and left it there. If you absorbed the water quickly, it's likely that whatever it touched will still be legible. It took about 5 minutes for the writing to completely disappear but it started to fade instantly, and within a minute I would say it was almost illegible. This is probably the same for other like inks.

Highly recommend these inks, you can get them from what I think is the official seller for the inks, Osteralia, on ebay at http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/osteralia.

Cheers!

Thanks Dc, I'm keen to try the blue's that you reviewed plus the sky blue. Also I would love to try the Jade and Emerald. They'll be next on my list, plus a waterproof ink like Noodler's bulletproof or warden lines for exams.

We are hoping that an Australian bulletproof black will be on the shelves in the near future.

I am very, VERY glad to hear that. I'd rather buy Australian where possible. Please keep us up to date with that!

I've got an update guys. I recently got a Pilot Prera and loaded it with Parker Quink. It was putting down an inconsistent line, sometimes dry and sometimes really wet. I thought it was something with the pen so I dissasembled and cleaned it. This helped but didn't solve the issue. Decides to switch to Robert Oster Black and what happens? Perfection. Nice consistent line, on the wet side but not crazy wet like I was getting with the Quink. Suddenly the pen wasnt scratchy either. I'm sticking to Mr Oster's creations from now on.

Some other trouble shooting has shown me also that there is one downside to this ink: it has a tendency to dry start if you leave your pen uncapped. Actually this is a bit annoying if I'm loading it in my primary pen because I tend to leave it uncapped in between taking notes. You get used to this quickly though and learn to cap your pen when it is not in use. I might nonetheless message Mr Oster on ebay and point out this issue with the ink.

Would LOVE waterproof options asap.

Messaged Osteralia and got a reply instantly, they are going to look into whether this occurred in their testing as well and see if they can resolve it if they find the issue.

Anyone looking for a 'bulletproof' black ink made in Australia, it's now available from JustWrite Pens, www.justwrite.com.au - look for Blackstone Barrister Black. I've tried a sample, and found it to work pretty well. They only seem to be selling full (30ml) bottles at the moment, no sample vials for sale, but... Maybe if you asked nicely? I'm a huge fan of the 'Colours of Australia' range, especially the blues - but they're *definitely* not waterproof...

I'll definitely give that ink a go just because of the name being that I'm a law student! Can't wait to get my hands on it. I'd like to see how it compares to my Platinum Carbon ink.

I've put some snapshot reviews of half a dozen of the inks.

Bondi Blue

Fire Engine Red

Emerald Green

Deep Sea

Moss

Yellow Sunset

I'm a bit new to doing any kind of reviews of ink and haven't quite figured out the best way for me. These should give a glimpse at least. What I would say is that all the inks I've tried have had some merit to them, and my current favourites are Moss and Deep Sea - though Fire Engine will replace Diamine Red Dragon and I will see how it fares by comparison in time.

That Moss though ... in person with a broad stub and on Tomoe River paper it is lush.

By the way guys, my favourite turned out to be the Green Green, has some nice shading to it in a medium nib. The black is the one I use the most, and I like it, is almost a true black in an M nib, and the Fire Engine Red is excellent for work/university notes as it really pops on the page.

I'll definitely go back for those three, but will be trying out some Diamine colours next as I've got enough Robert Oster Ink to last for a while.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
