Broken Decimo Click Mechanism

As the title says I've been having trouble with the click mechanism of my Pilot Decimo where I click the pen, the nib extends but doesn't 'catch' and when I release the button the nib goes back into the body and don't want stay extended. Recently I opened up the pen, took out the converter to clean it, put it back, and the clicking improved immensely, working 9/10 times. This morning I opened it up to see how much ink is left and it fails to click 9/10 times. Any ideas on what affect my opening it up could have had? Is this something I can fix or should I send it to pilot?

Sounds like maybe the converter isn't seated fully. You could try to push it in with more pressure.

+1. You have to really push the converter in there. Know that it is hard to remove it, too. I actually broke a con-50 once, trying to pull it out. I now stick to cartridges for my Decimo.

Thanks guys. I think the converter may be an issue. I took it out and replaced it with the ink cartridge that came with the pen and the metal sleeve and the clicking got much better. Only failing maybe 1/20 times. I tried putting the converter back and pushed it in as far as I could and still had a lot of trouble. Dunno what to do if I want to use the converter in the future.

It should work perfectly every time. Don't underestimate the amount of force needed to seat either the cartridge or converter. But if you've truly done your best and it's still not working reliably, there could be a problem that would require sending it to Pilot.

I think you'd have to send the whole pen in. At this point, you don't know if there's a problem with the nib unit or the click mechanism. If you had another nib unit, you could test whether that's the issue. But please, before going to more extreme measures, try to press the converter in much harder.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
