I did a nib exchange on a Visconti Pininfarina and it had to go back to Italy so it took about 2 months.

CoL has started keeping some parts in stock for popular pens. If they have the nib you want it won't take nearly as long as when all pens had to go to Italy. If they don't have your nib, yeah, you're looking at 8-10 weeks. Give them a call.

I broke the barrel on my Michelangelo...again **sigh**...but they have the barrel in stock so at least the turn around will be quicker.

I sent in two Homo Sapiens with Medium nibs to get Double Broad and Broad. Hopefully they are not headed towards Italy..

My dad got his HS nib exchanged from fine to medium. If I remember right it was real fast and super cheap. I think it was like $10 or $20 for the exchange. The fine nib he replaced had seen use as well.

Nothing. I did it through the store I bought it from.

I had a wonderful nib exchange experience with Coles last year. My Visconti HS Midi had a Fine nib with TERRIBLE flow issues (spitting ink one second and going super dry the next). I was so frustrated by it (and since I was swamped and expecting the nib swap process to be a nightmare), I cleaned the pen and stored it. I couldn't even look at it... haha

A couple of months later, realizing that I had a Visconti at home that could not write  , I emailed Coles to swap the Fine for a Broad nib and best of all I was able to get a 14k nib instead of the Palladium, which just wasn't right for me.

Although it's not my most used pen, I'm so happy I did the nib swap and cannot say enough good things about the whole experience and especially the level of service offered by Brandon. He's knowledgeable, friendly, quick to respond and a true asset to the company.

  • USPS delivered my pen to Coles on 4/13/15
  • I received my pen on 4/15/15 (yup 2 days later!! )

Do you know if Coles sent them to Italy? I just got a notice that one of my pens is heading over the Atlantic.

Thanx, Gerigo. One of my Viscontis is in Italy, having work done. I've got to send in my carbon graphite and I'm considering asking for a nib exchange form a medium to a fine. I like the medium nib, but it seems that a fine nib is more appropriate when using in public

I don't believe they did because they did not sent a notification of doing so.

I have had two nib exchanges performed by Coles in the past 6 months or so. The first time around the holidays was a disaster. It took forever and they sent it to the wrong address. The nib was pretty terrible but I wound up just selling the pen. The second time was around a month ago, and took about 3 weeks. I went from a F to an M, but the M again needs work. Ill just send it to a nibmeister this time.

I'm just curious: Since the nib units are so easy to remove from the HS (others as well?), why is it necessary to send CoL the entire pen for a nib swap? Warranty issue on new pens? Other reason(s)?

I didn't have to. I was keeping my original nib so I just paid CoL for the nib I wanted and they shipped it to me.

Did they specifically tell you it was necessary to ship the whole pen? I never really thought about sending just the nib - that would be a whole lot easier and cheaper to insure.

I did notice that when I got my pen back from CoL the nib was VERY difficult to remove. I know they have the little tool to remove/install them so Im guessing they tightened it with more force than I would apply when cleaning it.

Overall, I think the exchange service is great; it is much better than Pelikan's. I just wish they would exhibit some better quality control.

KTNJ: "They" didn't tell me anything. I have not used the the swap service. As I said, I was curious as to why the whole pen would need to be sent in if the object was to get a different nib, when the nib could easily be removed - obviously then sent to CoL by itself.

My experience with CoL is limited to having a cracked van Gogh cap/body replaced. Nothing to do with nibs. They handled it quickly and courteously.

I asked my question because of the way all the previous posts read (to me); it seemed as though everyone had sent their pens to CoL to have nib swaps. Maybe, I was misreading.

Next chapter of this saga

I received the pens back from Coles today.

Unfortunately, one of the pen's nib arrived like this.

Add to the fact that I requested Double Broad, and they sent Broad instead. Guess I will have to ring them up tomorrow.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
