Pelikan Cap Question (Clip Alignment)

My Tortoise 500NN arrived, and everything looks lovely, except that the clip seems to be a little out of alignment -- the clip ring is not flat against the cap, the end where it's attached to the clip is a little higher. I consulted google and it seems the cap can be disassembled relatively easily and the clip should be aligned with some care? (Thank you The Pelikan's Perch and sargetalon! :)) I haven't inked the pen yet because I wasn't sure if that would be the only explanation or there might be some more insidious issue that would require repair work (in which case the pen would be on its way back)?

 

And also, does this misalignment affect the functionality of the pen, i.e. would it cause the pen to dry out? I don't think I have any tools to hand that would be suitable for unscrewing the clip, so if it's just a little issue I'd live with it for the time being. The pen really is beautiful, and if I thought getting a 500NN would assuage my lust for a 500 (with the piston knob gold-filled as well), I was very wrong! :D

Hi Candide,

 

Straightening the clip in place is not hard.

It looks that your ring is not tighten enough, that looks to me to b the problem.

 

The only tools you will need are your hands and probably a piece of tire rubber ( inner tire from a bicycle) to grip the ring more strongly.

 

Unscrew the ring using the rubber to grip it, them, take the chance and clean the treads of the top of the cap. Then just screw it back on more firmly. It will go to it´s place. Sometimes the clip is to bent and you will need to force it to position a bit before screwing it back in place.

 

While unscrewing the clip ring, please be careful not to press the clip against the cap or you will risk making a mark in the cap because the tip of the clip will be pressed against the metal and permanently mark it.

 

As it is now it does not affect function at all.

Vasco, thank you for the detailed explanation. :) It's very much appreciated as I'm absolutely pathetic at diy things. I'll give it a go with some rubber. I couldn't get it to unscrew with just my fingers, but the rubber should provide enough grip.

Use only your fingers and the rubber, do not feel tempted to use pliers to help. That can be a disaster :)

That won't be an issue, I don't even own a pair of pliers. :P (Really not a DIY person! :blush: )

Vanco's method is sound. I'll only add that a thicker rubber band works well if you don't have any bicycle tire handy.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

To close the thread, I managed to unscrew the cap top with a rubber band and some difficulty, but the clip was actually properly aligned so it seems that it's a little bent (which is preventing the clip ring from lying flat). I made some half-hearted attempts to straighten the clip a bit, to (unsurprisingly) no real effect. Screwing the cap top in further helped, but it left the clip too tight against the cap so I unscrewed it and it's back to how it was. :P I'll leave it as it is, I don't mind as long as functionality isn't impaired. I don't use the clips of any of my pens either, so a clip that might be a smidgen loose is no issue at all.

And I thought the Aussies were a self-sufficient lot! LOL! Come on, Candide: get your act into gear, girl! Listen: both of the above learned gents are spot-on: either live with it the way it is now (no loss in practicality) or -- how about this? -- next time you go to your favourite pen shop, ask them with your most winning smile if they will simply straighten that clip for you since you have no pliers yourself?! I bet they'll do it for you in a jiffy and when you ask "How much?", they'll say "For you, love: nothing"... (Wanna bet?)

Sure, I'd be happy to take you up on that bet. :D My local pen shop doesn't do in-house repairs at all, everything is sent away (back to the distributer). :P

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
