Wahl Metal Pen Sizes

Recommended Posts

I have about 25 of these pens covering what I think covers all the sizes and most of the patterns.

I wonder if there are names for these sizes, since nib size varies in the same pen.

And is there actually a "proper" nib for any size, or were these different sizes options?

Largest:

From what I can tell, there is the largest, a broader full sized with a #4 nib. I also have one this size with a #5 nib. The pens are exactly the same size. Caps are interchangeable. They are 4 15/16" to 5"

Full length, slender:

Then there is a pen the same length, but more slender, and it seems to come consistently with a #2 nib.

MIddle length clip pen

4 5/8". I have three this size. Two have #4 nibs, and one has a #3 nib

Shortest clip pen

4 3/8". II have 6 this size. Three have #3 nibs, two have #2, and one a plain eversharp (replacement?)

Ringtop: my only normal ringtop has a #2 nib.

Finally the "Baby Wahl" with the #0 nib

What I've seen in the catalogs is not very helpful. W-E seems to use terms like "large size," "medium size," "size with the ring top and number three nib," etc.

I'm betting what is used today is a set of 'standardized' collectors terminology. I'm curious too. I have a number of these pens as well.

Maybe no real terminology then. Your experience with the unhelpful catalogs makes me also think that the nib sizes were also not standardized for the pen size.

So, perhaps we could speak of the clipped pens as:

small, medium, large, and oversized? Although the "over" is just girth.

Maybe Syd will have some idea when he comes around.

I just noticed something else. The clip size varies by model, but in an alternating way. Just like the picture above, the clip size is consistent throughout my collection for each pen length.

The largest size has a larger clip on all 4 of my examples. The full length "#2" slender has a smaller clip on all of my pens. The "medium length" clipped pen then also has the larger clip (three in my collection). And the smallest length clipped pen has the smaller clip again.

I do think there was standardization of nib sizes per pen size. I don't have enough knowledge, though, to know what the match-ups are.

There are enough W-E gurus on the board that someone should know.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just got my hands on a little gold ringtop, and it's comparable to everyone else's ringtop in size. It's got a very nice lever box...and I'm seldom impressed by lever boxes. The #2 nib is very flexy and looks early, with relatively straight sides. The listing was so damn laconic that I wasn't really expecting much: I was planning to put the nib on another pen, but now I think not.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
