A Really Deep, Complex Red..

mongrelnomad

Recommended Posts

I usually have go-to inks for each colour. They're usually Japanese. The exception, though, is red.

My favourite is the Montblanc Hitchcock red: deep and complex, it puts all other reds I've tried to shame. The problem: it's an LE ink, and as such, is not readily available.

Any suggestions for a replacement that, hopefully, is more accessible?

Too many pens; too little writing.

I like Diamine Red Dragon, as my darker red.

My standard red is Sheaffer Skrip red, which is a nice simple clean red.

A year ago I would have suggested Levenger Pomegranate, but alas it has recently been discontinued. Fortunately I have about a half a bottle left.

For something close to Hitchcock I would say Diamine Burgundy Rose or Private Reserver Fiesta Red.

I dislike Red Dragon. I consider it as a dirt brown.

How strange. My Red Dragon is definitely not brown.

My favorite red is Diamine Red Dragon. As other posters have mentioned, Diamine Burgundy Rose is a very close replacement for MB Hitchcock Red. Levenger Pomegranate is also a favorite of mine. I hadn't realized it was being discontinued...I'm going to have to try to scarf up another bottle.

I've always thought there's something wrong with my Red Dragon. Maybe I should do a comparison. Or maybe it's just my perception of the colour.

You should... Red Dragon has no brown in it. Diamine Oxblood can be called a "dirt brown"... I personally love it, but some people might dislike the "dry blood" color.

My go to red is Sheaffer Skrip red. It's truly red and well behaved. As a bonus it's easy to find and affordable.

Thanks guys. I've ordered Red Dragon and Oxblood.

Generally I'm not overly enthused with Diamine inks. Those I've bought tend ignominiously to be both thin and dry, but for the colour I'm willing to give them a look-see...

Actually, we have a comparison or two around here and Burgundy Rose by Diamine is a dead ringer for Hitchcock.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
