Lamy Safari M - Too Wet/page Bleed Through

Hi,

I have a Charcoal Black Lamy Safari in 'M' that I love to death. However, it is too wet and the ink bleeds through on many different kinds of paper. I usually ink it with Pelikan back or Quink.

In hindsight, I should have purchased an EF or an F, but is there a way to make an M Safari a little less wetter? Is there a different ink that can be used that lays down a finer line?

Regards,

Ravi

I had a similar problem with my Al Star. I switched over to Noodler's Black and it fixed it right up. My only Pelikan ink isn't super wet, but it isn't dry either.

But the F and EF Lamy nibs are still on the wet side. At least mine are.

Have you perhaps tried Camlin? I bought a bottle and have found it to be a very forgiving ink with less than ideal paper. I find Pelikan 4001 inks are pretty dry and the Lamy cartridges are quite good at taming the flow. Other inks that make a Safari dry are the IG stuff - R&K Salix comes out nicely and some of the KWZI stuff too... I have never really had a Lamy feel dry even with an EF nib though, so you may be best experimenting with ink - the F doesn't feel much finer than an M to me... I'd try the Camlin though - mere cents for a bottle and will not feather out of a B nib on moleskine paper

Have you tried playing with the nib?

Long story: I have a fine nib Al Star. It was scratchy. I was bending the tine up to get it aligned. (I'm so close, yet not close enough apparently). In any case, the result was that my Fine was writing like a Medium and putting down a ton of ink. I turned the pen around and pushed the nib onto the paper. Or I "rolled" it.

I laid the nib on the page. Then lifted the body, rolling more pressure on the nib. Not a lot of force. Just enough to bend the nib end towards the feed. That seemed to have fixed my problem.

Thanks guys. I am going to try the Camlin. Is there a website or ebay dealer that supplies Lamy Safari EF nibs?

Ravi; did the Camlin ink work for you? I buy spare nibs from Frank @ Fontoplumo they are called Z50's and you can have them in silver or black finish... If you are getting a nib and want something "interesting" the 1.1 nib really up's the game. The best part is you can wet-swap the nibs if you want. All the best!

+1 on it being the paper. However sometimes the ink does make a small difference. I switched from Parker Quink in washable blue to a Noodler's black in a fine nib and it took care of most of the bleed through on my Muji Notebook. I also use a Smythson notebook in their featherweight paper and there is no bleed through even with a 1.9 italix nib or a broad nib in either ink.

I think you can get them over Amazon, even. Might be more expensive than they should be (they're 5€ at my local stationery store), but you should be able to find them relatively easily.

I would check that the nib is not loose on the feed, if it is, then it's possible to make it press down more onto the feed, by tightening the side clips.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
