Sheaffer Boxes

Recommended Posts

I see there is a debate elsewhere on FPN on the desirability of presentation boxes.

I have a collection of Sheaffer pens and I have built up a collection of boxes. Some are in their original box but I often try to match my pens to purchased boxes.

I do like to store my collection in pleasing boxes and they have become an important element.I recently posted regarding two, what I considered, very pleasing cases and they really set off some of my more "exclusive" pens. I tend to use only one "day" pen, a well used 797.

There seems to be quite a wide range of boxes over the years but I wondered if anyone has taken an interest in the boxes and which pens they are associated with.

My main interest remains the pens themselves but other enthusiasts may also be curious about boxes.

Regards

Ian

For a short while I had a Sheaffer Snorkel Valiant that came with a nice case. I love boxes, but they've come to take more space than I'd like.

Hello Lazard 20

Thanks for sharing the photographs. They all seem to be Sheaffer(S). Beautiful.

Do you collect boxes?

You are welcome. On the other hand, no, I do not collect boxes; rather these boxes searched me, as well I keep them because for me, now and then, it is fun taking photos as these.

I'll add a couple. First is a TM Touchdown triple set; pen, pencil, and ballpoint. The outside is the same dark alligator as appears in the first of Lazard's contribution (I have the same approach as him; I don't chase the box, but I will give 'em a good home if they appear on my doorstep). So, 1950 or so:

And this is the Lifetime presentation box from 1963.

That Lifetime box is amazing Ernst!

I have a Sentinel Deluxe triple in a box like your TD triple:

And I've always like this box with its military clip set from the war years:

My favorite Sheaffer box. Not the best picture but I don't want to drag out the light box.

My goodness, don't tell me those PFMs each have one of the points illustrated on the lid!

As far as I can say. I can only read the chalk marks on 5 of them but the others look correct and they were sold to me as a set.post-51231-0-12082500-1460253003_thumb.jpeg

In terms of resale, we've found that for modern pens the case/box adds to the value. However, for ordinary (I.e. Not rare) vintage the jury is still out .... Sometimes I think it slows the sale of a pen, because "users" just want the pen and they falsely attribute too much of the price to the box.

Yeah, I don't think I'd pay for a box with an ordinary pen or set. I have a bunch that I just store and am ready to chuck. But I might for a collectible or for a unique box, maybe like the box for the military clip set above. And certainly Makas's set above with the special box is a rare gem.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
