Greetings From Singapore

G'day, I am Bill, English but living and working in Singapore.

I have always had a liking of pens from a very early age, My Aunts (That is Aunts with a capital A - they may not have been witches but they knew how ntom make a young boy laugh) worked in an accountancy firm and would bring home pens for me - I had a refillable ball point at one time but have since lost it.

Used fountain pens at school but having been taught to write when I was 3 by my grandmother in a cursive style then being forced to learn italic writing when I went to school at 5 kind of reduced my writing to similar to a doctors illegible scrawl. Not helped by the fact I am a professional engineer and think faster than I can write.

Anyway, long story short, my wife is Chinese and I visited China for the first time in 2009. I came across a boxed Hero Flying Eagle pen in a shop and was hooked on Hero pens. I like the special editions particularly and now have about 40 or 50! Particularly impressive are the Parker 51 lookalikes which retail for about 1US$ each in China and write brilliantly.

I need some space to store these pens so am constructing purpose built storage from old cigar cases etc, work in progress at the moment is a Gin Thye (Mooncake) box which should store 24 pens and two bottles of ink (Chinese of course - Boss (Lao ban) brand)

Next I have two cigar boxes to fit out and then plan to restore my old writing slope / box and fit it with custom storage.

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user in San Diego. I'm sure you will enjoy your time here. If you haven't already got one please look at the Kaigelu 316-- in my opinion the best of many good Chinese pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
