Xi Barcelona Pen Show, 2016

Hello,

The 2016 Barcelona Pen Show 2016 has finished, it took place yesterday, and I that think the event was a success. The size of the Barcelona pen show is small (just 15 expositors), but it has the advantage that the environment offers more intimacy between sellers, buyers and curious people attending the pen show.

I attended the pen show only in the morning, which is the preferred time for most of people. Compared to previous editions, I think that the level of assistance was the highest in recent years, which is really good and ensures future editions of the pen show.

Most of the exhibitors are Spanish, although there were also some well known vendors coming from Italy, Germany, Italy and Japan. In my case, managed to avoid temptations of buying interesting fountain pens. Basically, I was thinking of my recent purchases (Montblanc M and Montblanc Heritage 1912), which have consumed my pens budget for the rest of the year (I hope so). However, I did buy two inkwells, a Pelikan (Amethyst) and a Montblanc (Blue Hour).

I took some pictures with my iphone, although not many. Some colleagues were using SLR cameras and I thought that I could not compete with them. Anyway, here you have some of the pictures that will give a better flavor of the pen show.

First, one vendor offering papers and calligraphy material:

The fountain pens of Estilomanía vendor (one of the organizers):

The table of the “Central de l'Estilogràfica”, with some discounts for the occasion (in fact, that's the inkwell MB Blue Hour that came home, the last one!):

The table of Joseph, from “Philartpens”:

Joseph also offered products from “Vienna” local stationery shop, with the range of TWSBI fountain pens as the flagship product (this is the only vendor that carries TWSBI in Spain).

Here a German seller (I forget his name) that was repairing a pen on the spot. The buyer was looking forward to the process. I could not look away from the hands of this repairman, who was using the different tools with great ease:

Finally, some colleagues doing a bit of bargaining, with vintage hard rubber bars and nibs:

Hmmm, a pen show in Barcelona. Did fpnibs.com have a table?

Tempting.

I must remember to ask my wife if she fancies a weekend in Barcelona next spring!

Cheers,

David.

Dear David,

Unfortunately, Gimena (fpnibs) did not come this year. They came last year (and I bought one Gimena Ebenus), and hope they will manage to do so in 2017.

Regards,

Josep

  • 2 weeks later...

Josep!

On which days took place the show? March 18 through the 20th or just the 19th? It's always the weekend prior to Easter?

Maybe next year!

Regards,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
