Kobe (神戸市 Kōbe-shi) is the sixth-largest city in Japan and is the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture. It is located on the southern side of the main island of Honshū, on the north shore of Osaka Bayand about 30 km (19 mi) west of Osaka. With a population around 1.5 million, the city is part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto. Its name comes from "kanbe" (神戸), an archaic title for supporters of the city's Ikuta Shrine. Kobe became one of Japan's 17 designated cities in 1956.

Kobe is famous for its shirines and nioce architecture but among fountain pen and ink afficionados the name Kobe cause increased heart-rate. The city is a home of Nagasawa-Kobe stationery shop that offers incredible lione of more than fifty inks made by Sailor.

At the moment Nagasawa-Kobe offers 54 inks:

Some time ago I was send samples of two new Nagasawa-kobe colors.

Goshikiyama Ochre is strange color. It's more pink than ochre. The saturation is rather low and the flow is average. I'm rather disappointed with this one.

Here's the comparison of 52 Nagasawa-kobe inks.

I like this color, somehow.

I was wondering, do you have like a huge collection of inks or do you get samples?

As I've written in the review I've received samples. My collection is moderate - around 30 inks at the moment. I'm not a hoarder. Si buy new inks, try them and review them but if I don't use them I trade them. Also many people send me samples :)

I like it, but do not think I would correspond or sign using it. So, would not buy it.

Thanks for the review.

This is one I'll pass on. A bit too close to J Herbin Rouille d'Ancre, and I fear it is too light to really be legible.

Thank you for reviewing this ink. I would agree with you. I am not impressed by the color at all.

Yes.. I was dissapointed on this one too. I was hoping for something more "Ochre" with great shading.

I think I will use mine for ink mixing... I'll mix myself something more to my liking... ;)

I was slightly disappointed when I first got this but it grew on me. Then I added a couple of tiny drops of #39 Brick Brown-Red & it's a really lovely shading rich pinkish brown.

Thanks for the great review, as always! This is not the color I was expecting. I can't really see any use for it myself--perhaps for artists, or correspondence between ladies? It does seem to be a bit more substantial than the J. Herbin.

I kind of like it actually. Maybe if it's still around when I finish my bottle of Rouille d'Ancre... :P

This is one of those inks which may work well if it was sold as a watercolor paint, or used as one.

  • 2 years later...

Herbin's Rouille D'Ancre is one of the two inks I am never without (there may be more, but they haven't passed the year mark yet) - it is a fussy, persnickety coquette of an ink (anyone who assesses an ink by "performance" would run in horror!) but I find it has a unique charm. On it's own (in certain lights, and depending on how recently the pen was filled) it looks pink, but put it anywhere near another pink and it retreats into dirt!

When I saw the swatch for #54 on the Kobe site I was so intrigued that I ran straight to F.P.N. and found this rather gloomy review (from one of my most respected ink reviewers!) - but it wasn't enough to prevent me from trying a sample at least.

Results confirm Visvamitra's status as an ink reviewer. Color is a tad closer to brown and away from blue. Performance does not strike me as a significant improvement.
If I was on the initial search for something in this color range I would consider it, but whilst I have several botles of the Herbin in stock, I will not.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
