Real Hero Doctor Jumbos

Jamesbeat

Recommended Posts

I just received some genuine Hero Doctor Jumbos from a seller called 'Mentag' on eBay.

I took the plunge because Mentag's photos were watermarked 'yespen', which was the seller people used to buy from.

I was concerned that Mentag just stole Yespen's photos, but am happy to report that I received nine genuine pens today, after ordering them only a week ago.

Just thought I'd share, as trying to get the real ones is a minefield, and I know many people (including myself) have been burned in the past.

Hmm.

The photo showing several pens looks ok, but the photo showing the underside of the black pen looks like one of the bad ones.

I'm not going to use the word fake, because I think they are just made in a different factory, but the undesirable ones have a longer hood.

The overall length of the pen is about the same, but the clutch ring is further back.

I'll try to post a photo in a little while.

Sorry for the poor photo, but it's good enough to show what I'm talking about:

The top pen is the good one that I received today, the bottom one is the poor quality (fake?) one.

Note the position of the clutch rings.

Both came in what appeared to be genuine Hero Doctor blister packs.

I'll agree with Jamesbeat. I've fallen to the same trap recently. The bottom pen still writes ok, but the aero filler is difficult at best. After getting one like the top pen pictured, the difference is night and day. Easy filling, and it writes as well as my Parker 61.

Don't worry too much.

As Wxman2000 pointed out, the longer-hood version is still an ok pen, in fact I have been using one as my only pen at work for the past six months or so.

The genuine ones are noticeably better made though.

I think that Mentag is the new Ebay name for Yespen. At least Yespen has gone from my Saved sellers list and been replaced by Mentag, but my personal note on the seller is the same. Don't know why he changed the name!?

Ok good, that's confirmation of what I suspected - Mentag is Yespen.

Looking at Mentag's other items, maybe he/she changed the name because they now sell items other than pens and wanted a name that wasn't pen-specific?

aspire2it is a British based seller.

He used to sell genuine (I asked here on the forum if he had the real thing) Hero 616 Doctor and Hero 616-2. I thought it was a good idea to share the word, as he is located in Europe so you don't have to wait 1 month for the goods to arrive from China.

I bought these pens, too, and they're fakes, but they write okay. The filling mechanism is pretty awful, but otherwise, these aren't too bad.

The Jumbo's most easily distinguishable feature is the shorter length, when compared to the regular 616, of the section. I measured my Jumbo 616 and created a ratio of section-to-cap. I then, using the photo of the green pen in the eBay vendor's offering, created another ratio of section-to-cap. I found the ratios to be different, suggesting that the pen in the photo was not a Jumbo.

Good to know. I can order from Mentag and save myself a month of wait time.

What we need is a masterlist of authentic 616 sellers and confirmed fakes in one convenient place.

Mine took exactly one week to arrive from China from Mentag (ordered Saturday night, arrived in the mail the following Saturday) but of course it is quite possible that this was just a lucky fluke.

I live in the States now, but I'm from England.

Whenever my family send packages to me from England, they usually take a week to ten days to arrive so I expect that is how long people in the States ordering from that guy in the UK could expect to wait.

Interestingly, "mentag" canceled an order on me about six weeks ago, so stock may be spotty. Previously, I had ordered two lots of Hero 616 "Doctors" from different sellers and both had been the fake (I assume), lower quality pens, even though the listing pictures were of the real thing (I have a couple of older ones for comparison). Then I ordered a 10-pack from "jewelrymathmatics" and they are legit.

I visited this mentag ebay site to have a look-see. The packaged pens shown in the photo, I believe, are not the Doctor/Jumbo version of the 616. I say this because some time ago I purchased several of these identically packaged 616s and found them to be,despite the wording on the packaging, the regular 616 version.

The Doctor/Jumbo version has a larger/longer squeeze-filler creating a greater ink supply thus enabling the harried physician to go longer without refilling. This longer squeeze-filler requires the barrel to be longer. Hero, in an effort to retain the pen's original overall length, shortened the section. It is this shorter section, when compared to the standard 616, that distinguishes the Jumbo/Doctor.

The pens in the photo and those I previously received do not have a shortened section.

Other marks of a "true" 616 Jumbo/Doctor are the cap's conically shaped tip and the clip. These difference are most easily noticed by placing the Jumbo/Doctor next to the suspect-616. A non-Jumbo/Doctor will have a noticeably smaller cone on the cap's end and the clip will be straight and not slightly bowed as in the J/D.

K3eax, please take a look at my post above with the photo of the two pens.

Both pens arrived in identical (from memory) Doctor blister packs.

The upper pen has the short section/hood that you describe and is the 'real' Jumbo/Doctor. This is the pen I received from Mentag.

The section on this pen is the same length as that of the Parker "51", and it has the longer filling system that you describe.

The lower pen is the one with the longer hood, though the overall length of both pens is about the same.

The lower pen is of much lower quality, but writes quite nicely.

The important thing to note is that both were packaged in 'Doctor' blister packs.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
