Aurora 88: Feel Of Quality

I love flagship pens. I love the best pens to write with. That's why I've always been searching for a true writer pen, the best, although I know that there is not a single answer.

In my quest I've tried the Pelikan M1005, but with these pens you always have the same problem: you never know if your EF nib will write as a true EF or will be a F, M, B... In my case, my EF behavies like a M.

I've found very good pens: Delta Dolcevita Oversize, Sailor KOP... But I was searching a piston filler when I read good things about Aurora pens. And finally I decided to order an Aurora 88 big EF.

The first impression was: "My god, that's the feel of quality!" In my hand, this pen is a wonder. Only the Sailor KOP gave me this feel. Not the Pelikan, not my Parker, not any of my sold Montblanc.

This pen is stunning, breathtaking. It's so well done! And the nib is marvelous. So the only I can say is:

1. Appearance, design, construction, quality: 10/10

2. Weight & Dimensions: 9/10 I just prefer bigger pens, but this is so confortable in hand.

3. Nib & Performance: 10/10

4. Filling System & Maintenance: 10/10 The smoothest piston I've ever used.

5. Cost & Value: 9,5/10 Not a cheap one, but I know why: overdose of quality

6. Conclusion: Final score 9,9/10 The perfect pen doest'n exist, but...

Total agreement. This is my Grail pen. My daily pen is an EF with gold cap. It's the most reliable fountain pen nib I've encountered.

'Tis a thing of beauty and having handled one a couple of times can appreciate your love for it.

Congratulations.

Hope to see more photos of it in use in the near future :)

Great, to the point review....

Agree with you 100% about the 88 and KOP too.....

88's are great pens and very enjoyable to write with....

Think they're one of those under-appreciated pens....

Aurora is next on my list of Italian pens. I was thinking Optima more than the 88 just because the Optima design is quite unique. The 88's profile is, more or less, similar to other cigar shaped pens like the MB 146 or the Sailors, Pilots and Platinums. The nib on the Optima however is the same as this one, and of course the build quality would be similar to the 88.

That's right. I preferred the 88 because it's longer than Optima and I like its shape. But the Optima offers more choices and it has the same nib and the same quality.

I have the all resin versions and they are just as pleasing. Both the large and the small - the latter being about 10 years old and the resin at that time seems of a better quality than the 'small' versions today.

Great pens and a joy to write with.

I have 4 88s and like 6 Optimas. The Optimas are every bit as nice. They use the same nib and piston fill mechanism. Everything said here about the 88 applies to the Optima as well IMO. I don't carry them just because they are too pretty. I also like the form factor just a bit better on the 88. It feels just a tiny bit more natural and I think looks better in a work setting. The Optima is just a bit too "wild" in appearance. My Optimas are desk pens. Anything with the large gold Aurora nib is tops in my book. I need an Alpha and Talentum next.

I just recently got a 1952 88, from my birth year and close to my birth date, I believe. It immediately occupied a "special pen" slot in my collection.

Ha.

I rally don't like Diamine Twilight. Waay too saturated. Yours looks all chalky and lovely. Must be the pen's charm and the paper's quality. :)

Must be that! Can you recommend me some blue black inks? Which do you prefer?

Arghhh !

I've been searching for years for THE one.

My fave changes every now and then, although Akkerman 10 is still my favourite all round ink, or is it Noodler's Ellis Island? Perhaps Seitz-Kreuznach Navy Blue ?

Sailor Blue Black is up there at the moment . . . anyway have a look here and take your pick :)

Best of luck.

Let us know which you like.

Wow! This Akkerman 10 is just what I've been looking for! Thanks re-again!

I use Pilot Blue/Black exclusively in my EF 88 (I think it is the only ink that has ever been in it) and I like the combo a lot.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
