post-128043-0-58875900-1456840471_thumb.jpgYes, sometimes it goes the other way too - nice 51 insignia / signet scored yesterday as a 'Parker 61' for not much money.

I also get a nice, original box & instruction sheet for one of my generically boxed 61s. Result!

Hey, last summer I picked up what turned out to be a 1926 Duofold Laidtone in a Montblanc hard clamshell case. Had a good laugh with the people in the antiques store about it being a Parker pen and the woman said "Well, it *is* the more prestigious brand...." And my response (being the Parker fan that I am) was "Yeah, well, MB would like you to THINK that...." :P

When I went back in the following week, after asking whether the price seemed decent (especially given that the pen seemed a bit on the fragile side), the woman dropped the price by more than half, and said "And I'll throw in the box." Hey, I figure I could eventually sell the box for at LEAST $12.60 US (which is what the woman came down to, without my even having to haggle at all...).

Wow, that's an awesome score Ruth! My Insignia turned up today - it's in remarkably good condition all in all, although there are two dings to the conical end of the barrel. I'm going to try and haggle a little discount from the seller & then go in in search of a 'pen doctor'. Most importantly, I now have that period correct and marked 61 case for my recently arrive Surf Green MK I.

Thanks. In the last year and a quarter the stars seemed to be aligned -- I kept managing to be in the right place at the right time (in the past nearly everything I found in the wild were either junker third tiers, seriously overpriced pens -- like a Waterman for $295 US with the nib bent at about a 90° angle :o -- or Sheaffer school pens).

This year? Not so much.... And I seem to be completely jinxed when it comes to getting my hands on an Emerald Pearl Vacumatic for anything resembling a reasonable price -- something ALWAYS happens (sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes seriously bad; the most recent attempt I got outbid by a whopping 18 cents US... :gaah:).

So, what color is "Surf Green"? I have a black 61 and and a turquoise one (dunno what the "official" color name is).

Check out Richard Binder's site Ruth, at the end of his page about 61s, he has all the colours. I feel your pain about loosing that Vac by 18 cents. Ouch!

Here you go, Ruth. All three arrived today & the middle pen is Surf Green - it's a little brighter in the hand than this camera 'phone pic suggests. It's exactly the same colour a Fender used for Strats back in the day (although you can still get reissue Strats in Surf Green, too).post-128043-0-32053900-1456939599_thumb.jpg

Wow, that top one is a great color! I thought I was going to be able to get one that color at DCSS a couple of years ago -- but it had a big crack in the barrel and the seller snatched it out of my hand and shoved it under the table....

Nice looking set, too -- just not 51s....

I see the listing has been pulled by the seller.

Ah, Rage Red... Yes, it's one of my favourite colours on the 61. I have an original, cased MK I in Rage with a Heritage cap that I MAY (or may not!) move on soon - it has those 'balance to see if it needs filling' instructions, too. I think I'm at fifteen 61s now - I'm almost afraid to go count 'em for fear of revealing my purchasing profligacy!

No wonder you like the red. A she color it is. Isn't it? My wife is always after my red pens. Lol.

That red 61 doesn't look Rage Red to me. Not bright enough. Looks burgundy.

I wonder if this 61 of mine is a Rage Red?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
