As always with a Pelikan 800, they are wonderful writing instruments. Mine arrived today (bought online from Japan) and it did not disappoint in terms of writing quality.

However, I am slightly disappointed at the lighter cap which (in the model of the pen which I received) is rather lighter, almost a sandy beige compared to the main body which has the deep brown, blue and gold of the pictures one sees online. The result is that there is a colour inconsistency which makes the pen less stunning than I expected. This seems to be the result of the thin and translucent resin cap which is obviously part of the design (giving the user a view of the nib when the pen is shut) but when posted, this thinness of material does create a slightly oddly coloured upper body to the pen compared to the main part which contains the ink and the nib... This is obviously a matter of taste, but I wish I had been able to see the pen (or select it from a number of different examples) rather than buying online on an internet site and taking a chance: I would have tried to select the darkest coloured cap available.

So my advice would be: if you can, do try to see the pen physically before buying.

That said, these are great pens: I own many Pelikans and this is a still a welcome addition to my collection but it won't be a top favourite.

Since writing my earlier post, I think have found a "radical" solution to the less than impressive, light beige coloured cap.

I simply swapped it round with a black cap from another 800 I don't use very often and now the pen looks and feels much better, with the attractive main body displaying the Grand Place design in a deep brown, blue and gold, but made to look very classy and distinguished by the black cap or, if unposted, the black top and black nib unit.

I wonder if other buyers of the 800 Grand Place will have a similar reaction?

I got pick mine out in person from 3 available and was able to pick the one with the most pleasing colors.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
