Greetings From Brasília, Brazil

Hi!

After reading this forum for some time and, more recently, posting on a few threads, I believe it's past the time for the mandatory presentation thread.

My first contact with fountain pens happened when I was still a kid: I had the opportunity to have one disposable Japanese fountain pen during the early 90's. Fast forward to 2014 I had my first contact with Faber-Castell fountain pens. Unlike their school and art products that are ubiquitous in Brazil, I've never seem their fountain pens before, and, different from other fountain pens I usually met at stationary shops (Cross, Crown etc.), these really caught my attention. After thinking about it for a few days, I ended up choosing an E-Motion with dark brown wood barrel and the quality of this pen is remarkable. That's when I got to FPN, trying to learn more about fountain pens in general and how to take proper care of my new acquisition. Since then I regularly visit the forums.

Later last year I decided to try my first classic pen, a Paker "51", and early this year a Sheaffer Snorkel. While the "51" is a trouble free pen (I bought it NOS), the Snorkel came with a lot of new questions and FPN was here to help me again, but this time I felt the need to register and here I'm now. So, more than a "presentation" post, this is also a "thank you" post. I really appreciate the passion for fountain pens people show here and their willingness to help others. I hope to someday be able to help others as much I've been helped so far.

Best regards,

Pedro

Oi Pedro, bem-vindo a FPN!

This is, indeed, a great site to hang around. Lots of folks always willing to help. The only downside is that it's addictive :), and usually it leads to a big dent in the bank account :D.

Congrats on your pens. You were very lucky to find a NOS Parker 51!

Enjoy your pens.

I was luck indeed, but I think only the pen was NOS. I didn't have any marks or scratches, and the pli-glass sac was pristine. Can't say the same for the cap as it has a lot of micro scratches and gold plated is damaged at some points (the cap is my profile picture). I think it's from a donor pen. Anyway it's a great pen and one of my favorites.

I really appreciated the Portuguese welcome. :D

Brazil is a really nice place. I noticed your flag is California's. I visited SF and LA three years ago with my wife and we had a great time. The 101 road trip was stunning!

Actually the pen was made in Argentina, so I guess we have the give them the credit for the finding.

This is a photo the day it arrived (actually night). This is a cell phone photo with very poor light.

Two days latter, sunlight.

Detail of the cap showing the parker logo and "Industria Argentina". It's also possible to see that this cap is not NOS.

This probably the best photo from the barrel I have from the first couple of weeks with the pen.

The aerometric system with the pli-sac already stained from Sheaffer purple. Unfortunately I have no photo of it before that. It was completely clear.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
