Just Purchased A Waterman Expert Iii... Question About Cartridge...

I just purchased a Waterman Expert III and would like to know if the pen takes international cartridges? More specifically, would it take a Montblanc cartridge without any problems since I would prefer to use the Montblanc Permanent Blue/Black cartridges for those times I am not using the converter.

I keep reading some that say you can and some say that you can't and should only use Waterman cartridges.

I do not have an Expert III but a II, so I am not 100% sure.

Problem with SI carts in Waterman is not the mouth/nipple, but the bottom of the carts versus a ring Waterman has inside some of their barrels.

The waterman long carts have a slightly smaller diameter at the bottom thant the SI. And not all SI carts are exactly the same.

On most of my Watermans I can use an SI with impunity, although riding a spare cart piggy-back is a no-no on most Watermans.

I have used a long Pelikan Edelstein without problems in several Watermans.

Montblanc cartridges are SI size (their modern converter however is proprietary and will not fit most pens that use SI.)

So it is a matter of trial and error. If yo can drop the cartridge without problems in the barrel so that the mouth of the cart disappears it will work.

The Expert III, I can piggyback a second Waterman short cartridge behind the first one, although it has to go with the nipple facing upwards. I don't mind not being able to piggyback the Montblanc if they are slightly different size. I was just curious if the nipple end would match up with the pen itself without leaking or whatnot.

No, on the nipple end they are -almost- identical. The converters are slightly different, but just minor.

I have never mixed converters (I am not very fond of converters and prefer cartridges if I can get them in my favourite colours)

And I have used long Waterman carts in several SI pens succesfully, notably my Conway Stewarts and some others. Never had any problems.

Just to report back, I bought a 8-pack of Montblanc Permanent Black cartridges today and the cartridge itself is pretty much identical to Waterman and no problems with use. Plus they can be piggybacked just like the Waterman cartridges.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
