Snorkel Sac Protector - Source?

Recommended Posts

I was repairing a Sheaffer Valiant today and I found the sac protector had snapped in two right at the junction between the upper and lower sections. It's one of the later models with the crimps between narrow guide rails. I've not been able to find a source for these at any of the places I usually shop online. Does anybody know of a source?

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

The new Postal rates have made selling such a part a challenge.

Best bet, buy a parts pen and harvest it.

Thanks for the advice. Can one get one of the sac protectors from the earlier snorkels into the section from a later pen? I've never tried it, and don't know if the guide rails fit/align.

I am reasonably convinced that Sheaffer did not build two pens the same way for most of the 1950's.

I found an old snorkel I forgot I had at the bottom of a pile of 'junk' pens. It's earlier, and I don't know if it'll fit, but I'll try. Trying might be the first step towards failure, here, but I will try.

Todd is being a bit facetious. Any snorkel sac guard will fit another snorkel. There were variations in how the plug fit in and the end was crimped, maybe the spring ring looks different, but even then the parts will fit together and work.

The sac protector and the section need to be compatible so you'll nave to move both from your parts pen.

They already are compatible. No need to move the section from one pen to the other unless the original is damaged.

All of the sections have 1 wide slot and 4 narrow ones, so can take sac guard that is keyed (3 narrow and 1 wide spline) or one that is not keyed with 4 narrow splines.

You can also use the same section with both Triumph and open nib units. The mount is different, but the threads that go into the section are the same.

Note that you do encounter the occasional section/nib thread arrangement that has smaller diameter threads, but even these have the 1 and 3 slot arrangement so can take the same sac guard, which is the issue in this thread. But they are not seen as often as the larger thread parts.

Ah! Didn't know that. I assumed if the protector had 4 thin splines, the section had 4 narrow slots. I never looked at those sections all that closely because I guess I've never had to swap a protector with a wide spline to another section.

Last night I reassembled this using the replacement sac protector and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the help and advice.

I don't find myself writing with my Sheaffers very often. I don't know why, because those Triumph nibs are exceptional, I think.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
