Parts Question: Best Way To Source Caps?

I have some pens without caps. I wasn't hungry it was how they came in the grab bag.

But now I'm left with what looks like a decent red transitional Estie and black J Estie without caps.

I've looked on EBay but I don't want to buy a whole pen just for the cap; I'd just repair the pen WHICH STILL LEAVES ME IN NEED OF A CAP! (and sounding like a pirate) ARGH!

Sometimes, I see, on Ebay, a seller offering an Esterbrook cap. However, more often, I see the offer of an "AS IS" Esterbrook , that doesn't work, or is damaged. This is a good source for "donor" parts.

Sometimes, it seem more expensive, but keep in mind that the parts, you do not use, can sold to others, recovering some of the cost.

Where in California are your capless pens located. I know a guy with a huge box of Esterbrooks.

Noteworthy is that a cap may end up costing you as much as a whole unrestored pen.

Just to add to Farmboy's comment. The general rule in vintage pens is that "the one that has the cap wins".

Is it true I once paid 3 figures for a cap?

I thought it was 4 figures.

Don't tell him, he doesn't need to know what he did.

I'm in Paso Robles, about 4 hours south of SFO on the 101.

Interesting thing about caps being as much as whole pens because I have 4 random caps that I was going to start a game of guess the pen with. Although the Venus cap works well on my black J Estie (one I'm missing a cap for). Then it occurred to me that I'm not sure what pen goes with what each cap. Oh well.

Because I think every Topic should have a picture, here are the pictures of my caps...just because.

FarmBoy: if your friend is part of the network, he can private message me if he wants to part with some good caps/pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
